Exclusive Interview: Horror Film Director Ricky Bates Talks

31 Oct, 2012

Happy spooky day AiPT readers! We metaphorically sat down with Excision writer and director Ricky Bates to talk about his film, the state of horror today and the process it took to get his film on the screen.

The feature length version of Excision was released on DVD on October 16th and it?s safe to say its journey from short film to your living room was a long and laborious one. Talking with Ricky though, it?s obvious it was a journey well worth taking. Being Halloween and all we highly recommend checking this movie out:Ain?t It Cool News rated it the 2nd best horror film of 2012 yesterday. However, before you do, learn how it got made and even some tasty tidbits about what went on behind the camera!

AiPT: Thanks for taking the time to talk with me.

Ricky: Hey, that was a nice review. I appreciate it big time. I loved the T&A. [laughs]

AiPT: Hey, it?s a good movie and it deserved it. Speaking of which, the last few years must have been a wild ride for you. Starting way back in 2008 with the Excision short film right up to the release of Excision in January at Sundance straight on through to the DVD released this month. How has this rollercoaster ride been?

Ricky: My friend, this has been a very crazy couple of years. I made the short and I had no idea it would be as successful as it is, I mean you never really know, it?s kind of like a personal piece and then it ended up playing at 50 film festivals. It won 24 awards and got all this buzz and what not, and that led to all these meetings out in Los Angeles. I moved out to Los Angeles and I had written a feature version [of Excision] while I was editing the short.

AiPT: That?s interesting, so you made the short film to use as a business card?

Ricky Bates: My goal was to use the short as my calling card for a feature. I got all these meetings and everyone said, ?The script is crazy, no one is ever going to watch this movie, you?re a madman,? all this shit. I got some meetings from some pretty big studios too and everyone went ?No, no, no.? So I wrote a few more scripts that I just fucking hated man, and this script was always lingering in my head because it was about growing up in Virginia and I knew that whether or not anyone let me make a movie again this had to be my only movie or definitely my first one.

The movie poster for the short film

AiPT: What did you have to do to get this movie off the ground and into production?

Ricky: We spent about 4 years, about 30 of my friends from growing up in Virginia, and one of my friends from college in New York financed the film for me. We all just got together, I made some bunk beds and my apartment in LA was basically turned into a youth hostel for filmmakers. My landlord almost kicked me out twice while we were shooting it. We lost financing twice while we were shooting it. We built all the sets in my friend?s garage, I mean this was the most ghetto assembly. I couldn?t afford to hire a crew, so we got some freshmen from the Long Beach State Film program and had them be the crew. I was showing them how to set up sink fans the first day. It was madness my friend, madness.

Everything was brightly lit, because the audience has grown used to feeling comfortable in a horror movie with that classic lighting. If you take them out of it they don?t know what to think. They aren?t programmed to see this kind of stuff in that world.

AiPT: Coming off the short film, how did that affect the way you approached the script for this?

Ricky: My intention was always for it to be a feature. With a short it hits its marks, you know A.B.C., but there?s really no room for me to play around and I like the short a lot and yet its 18 minutes; that?s a long short. Honestly if I were to make it over again I?d have made it ten minutes tops. But 18 seemed like no time at all when I was making it. I was so ready to develop these characters more and personalize it more. All the nuances and stuff from my childhood I couldn?t fit a lot of it in that short. One funny thing, when everyone knew I was in the process of making the feature, they said, ?Oh I can?t wait to see the feature because then finally we get to see what happens after the surgery!? And I was like, ?You?re going to be sorely disappointed because that?s the end of the movie.? Just shooting one more frame than we did would do a total disservice to the story.

AiPT: What?s funny is there?s probably tons of people expecting a sequel now.

Ricky: Yeah well, dude, when I was shopping the script around I got all kinds of fucked up terrible notes. I was told, ?What do you think about adding a rape and then we find out she?s pregnant in the garage??

AiPT: Sweet Jesus.

Ricky: Yeah well every studio exec wants to add a rape scene to just about everything.

AiPT: What?s funny is, you said people saw the short and now they want to see the feature, but now that?s gonna be backwards, isn?t it? After I saw the movie I said, ?Wait, I want to see the short film!?

Ricky: Hopefully we?ll release the short. I didn?t want anyone watching it before the feature because it spoils the ending. The short is the same beginning middle and end. I really didn?t make any money doing this, no one did, the actors made a very very minimal amount and so one day I?ll get the short out there assuming this gets some sort of following and it gets a DVD with special features. And hopefully, you know, I?ll make enough money to go out to Red Lobster or something.

AiPT: I was doing some Googling before this interview and I saw the short film is on Vimeo but it?s password protected.

Ricky: It sure is brother. It sure is.

AiPT: I was sitting here going, should I attempt to crack the code? no there?s no way I?m going to crack this code.

Ricky: [Laughs] You try and crack the code. If you can crack the code I?m sending you a 15 dollar Red Lobster gift certificate. You know what, that?s going to be a contest now. To the Adventures in Poor Taste readers: The first person who reads this and cracks the code gets a 15 dollar Red Lobster gift certificate from the director.

AiPT: The widespread pandemonium you?ve surely caused is on your hands now, Ricky. I saw that you won the directors award at the Boston Underground film festival.

Ricky at the Boston Underground film festival.

Ricky: Yeah man that?s a great festival.

AiPT: The films that they?ve shown are just amazing.

Ricky: Oh yeah they keep getting better and better films. My short actually played at the festival back in 2008.

AiPT: I saw that. Didn?t it win for best short film?

Ricky: Some sort of special mention of some sort. The people that run that festival are cool as hell. I loved going to that one. It was awesome. I got pretty wasted at that one.

AiPT: [laughs] It?s a good party on top of being a festival?

Ricky: Oh! Oh! Oh! You go my friend, and let?s say you don?t like any of the films that play next year, you go for the party. These are some people you want to party with. I?ll tell you right now.

AiPT: [Laughs] Good tip. So we?ve got a contest for the readers and now some advice. Certainly every actor is exceptional in Excision which in large part is due to the directing. What was it like directing seasoned vets like John Waters or Malcolm McDowell? When McDowell appears in the movie I was like, ?Hell yeah, this movie just got 10 times better!? No offense to the film it was just so awesome to see him in this.

Ricky: [Laughs] Malcolm was great man. What I did was, I got a bunch of great outtakes with him, but after we got the scene we kept trying to get it as dry as possible. We only had Malcolm for a day. I was scared at first because I actually owe his son money from a baseball bet from like five years ago. I was like, ?Oh shit I hope Malcolm doesn?t bring this up.? He was awesome. Really good dude, really really good guy.

AiPT: Well, now that cat?s out of the bag. Hopefully you didn?t bet on the Red Sox. Could you describe your directing style?

Ricky: Watching Excision to a certain degree is like watching a stage play where I get to pick where you?re sitting in the theater any given second. I use very theatrical blocking. I don?t really let the actors move outside a certain amount of space.

AiPT: Is that hard for the actors?

Ricky: It was very hard for a lot of the actors because I literally had them acting to marks on the lens. So even scenes with other actors they couldn?t look at them, which is really disconcerting. It creates a distance and sort of a coldness which aids in the tone of the film, so that was a rule that I made for the movie before we started shooting. It took awhile for everyone to become comfortable with it. Malcolm was instantly like, ?You fucking punk kid what are you doing?? but he was incredibly nice about it. He was a total gentleman.

AiPT: And John Waters must have been a trip?

Ricky: John. John is one of my heroes. I sent him the script and Traci [Lords] actually introduced me, she knows I?m a huge fan and I sent him the script. And I said ?I?d love for you to play Reverend William.? I got a call really early in the morning and I picked up and I said ?Who is this?? And he says, ?Well Ricky it?s John Waters.? He goes, ?Well you know this is a really strange script.? And my heart sank. And there was this long pause and I was like, ?Oh shit? not you too John? and he goes, ?Well, listen. I don?t fly coach and I?m not shaving my mustache, but I?m going to do it.? [Laughs] And that was it.

AiPT: How long was he on set?

Ricky: He was there just one day. He and I are still in touch. Of all my heroes that I?ve met, and it looks like John will be in my new movie too, but you meet people that you admire and they turn out to be assholes. John turned out to be a better dude than I ever imagined. He?s just an across the board legit person.

AiPT: Maybe you should have told him upfront you were half hiring him for the mustache. Am I right?

Ricky: [laughs] Yeah I wouldn?t want to get rid of that. No one would.

AiPT: The structure of Excision is extremely tight. That made me think, were there any scenes you had to cut?

Ricky: Yeah, you know I cut a pretty good amount. Basically when I write I hit marks and I make sure the character arcs get them from point A to point B to point C. From there, after I create the structure and keep the narrative fairly loose. As long as my character is moving towards the final destination that I need the character to get to. I keep things loose so that I can free write. I?ll spend a night and write 15 scenes. Then I?ll plug them in and realize only five of them work in the context of this story and I?ll throw the rest in a binder and maybe I?ll use one or two of these scenes in another movie some day.

AiPT: On that note, I was impressed by how well paced it was too.

Ricky: Right, I have no interest in making a movie too drawn out. Part of me is really concerned with being an entertainer. If this was 100 years ago I?d be a carnival barker by trade. I want to keep it moving and keep it, sort of fun, and I love my sort of gross out moments. In the theater particularly, I want to nail the audience participation moments. Sort of like what William Castle used to do. I think it?s important, in the spirit of the movie, for everyone in unison to go ?Oooh? and ?Ahhh.? And feel angry and feel sad and I try to take the viewer through some fairly extreme emotions in as short amount of time as possible.

Filmmaker by habit, carnival barker by trade.

AiPT: Right, if it gets boring or stale the audience starts to feel like the film isn?t genuine anymore.

Ricky: Yeah, yeah and I cut it down man. My first cut was actually an hour and forty minutes and I got it down to 80 minutes.

AiPT: When you were writing these deleted scenes, how important did they feel while you were writing them?

Ricky: They were all important while I was writing them. Now I knew this was my first feature, so what I would do in my script is, I would have a backup scene that would create the same kind of emotion that I could use in case a scene didn?t end up working the way I wanted it to. I wrote backup scenes for things that were necessary to move the story forward. So I really wrote this script as a filmmaker more than a screenwriter. My specialty would be, dialogue maybe, and the crazy stuff, the crazy sort of psycho sexual stuff. Something?s wrong in my head and I guess I do an okay job of sharing it with people. [Laughs]

AiPT: I don?t know if there?s anything wrong with that. I thought those dream sequences were incredibly beautiful. Sure there?s a lot of gore in them, but the way they were shot and the way they felt?

Ricky: That was another rule. Until the garage scene no violence would be disgusting. It was all supposed to be pretty and beautiful. I tested blood on different color palettes, and that?s where I chose the turquoise so that blood would look beautiful on it. Another rule I gave my cinematographer was that at no point should the dream sequences look like anything other than a Disney children show. Everything was brightly lit, because the audience has grown used to feeling comfortable in a horror movie with that classic lighting. If you take them out of it they don?t know what to think. They aren?t programmed to see this kind of stuff in that world.

AiPT: I liked how overly sexualized she looked too. It really hammered home not only her twisted nature but also her obsession.

Ricky: Yeah. The concept was that in her dreams this is how she sees herself. And this is how audacious she is in real life. We also didn?t want to create too much narrative in the dream sequences because that would become boring. We set precedence that the audience could read into them however they like. But hopefully you get what we were going for too.

AiPT: That seems like a really unique idea. What gave you that idea?

Ricky: Honestly just hearing David Lynch talk about filmmaking you know. I?m more concerned with narrative than he is, but he?s definitely a director I admire. The dream sequences were an opportunity to sort of let loose. We set boundaries, but there was a lot of room to play within those boundaries.

AiPT: David Lynch is probably my favorite director. In college I took a Film Noir seminar and I chose to do my seminar paper convincing everyone the man doesn?t try to make Film Noir films; he lives film noir.

Ricky: [laughs] I like that, I like that. His daughter Jennifer is a friend of mine. Her movie Chained is good. You should check it out.

AiPT: What are you working on next?

Ricky: Right now it?s titled The South Will Rise Again. Imagine if the guy who made Excision made a Ghostbusters movie and that would be this movie.

AiPT: The title makes me think of a Western, but I take it it?s not a western then?

Ricky: No, it?s about a kid from the deep south who moves to the big city and becomes fairly metropolitan. Then he has to move back home because he can?t get a job after grad school during the recession blah blah blah and he moves back into his parents house and it?s now haunted. He and the punk rock girl from the bar and the town outcasts band together to find out what happened while he was gone type deal.

AiPT: Are you planning to shoot that in your hometown in Virginia?

Ricky: We are shooting that in Georgia. You get tax benefits in Georgia and the backstory takes place around Sherman?s March.

AiPT: Are there any books that influenced you in particular?

Ricky: Yes dude, yes. Particularly the book We Have Always Lived in the Castle. The author?s name is blanking on me. Stay there sir.

Hear Ricky walk away.

Hear rustling.

Hear Ricky bobble phone.

You there?

AiPT: I?m here.

Ricky: Shirley Jackson is the author. It?s super short. I read it when I was younger and it made no sense to me. I started reading it again and it has one of the most devious, interesting female protagonists I?ve ever read.

AiPT: What else has influenced your writing?

Ricky: I lot of the stuff in my movies reflect my personal life. Like, that scene where the guy goes down on the girl when she?s on her period? My friend. This has happened to me!

AiPT: [laughs] No it hasn?t! Good Lord.

Ricky: It has! That mirror scene [where the boy?s face is covered in blood] is exactly how I remember looking at myself.

AiPT: That just puts new meaning to that scene right there. A lot of horror films these days seem to be geared towards the teen crowd more than anything, which is unfortunate because most of these movies aren?t the slightest bit scary. But something like Insidious has a certain tone that feels original and?

Ricky: I like Insidious. I think it?s a good movie.

AiPT: I have some die hard horror friends that just rip it apart, but I felt something from it that I don?t feel from most horror films today.

Ricky: It?s so unfortunate, it?s so fucking unfortunate that horror fans, and I love them, they are the reason I make these movies. Horror fans don?t go to a movie once a month to try to get laid. They need these movies and they love these movies. They are special to them. What audience would you want to make a movie for more?

But then they are always arguing with each other more vehemently than any other group I think. ?That?s fucking bullshit? and ?Fuck this person? and a film like Insidious, maybe it?s not perfect but look at the majority of stuff that?s out there. It?s worth watching, faults and all. My god do you want another Chernobyl Diaries? Jesus Christ dude, I watched that movie and I almost fucking slit my throat. A lot of these indie filmmakers are doing ballsy stuff, something like Kill List: these are interesting films made by actual filmmakers. Support them so they get to make more.

AiPT: How has the reaction been to your film?

Ricky: For myself I?ve gotten emails that say either ?This is the best movie I?ve ever seen in my life? or ?I?m going to kill you.?

AiPT: Are you serious?

Ricky: Yeah. They say stuff like, ?You should be killed for making this movie.?

Ricky at Sundance with the cast.

AiPT: Seems a bit harsh. We got your back, Ricky. I liken your film to Insidious to some extent because there?s a certain tone it strikes. You come away from it and think, this isn?t just trying to scare me; it?s doing things on multiple levels and satisfying the avid moviegoer as well.

Ricky: The idea was between an eighties teen comedy and a David Cronenberg movie. Have you ever seen Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains?

AiPT: I haven?t, no.

Ricky: Write that one down dude. You will fall in love with Diane Lane and you will never look back. In fact, Pauline?s character is slightly inspired by Diane Lane?s character.

AiPT: What are your thoughts on the state of horror today?

Ricky: Have you read the book Shock Value yet? Or the Monster Show? These are the two best books about horror culture, you?ve got to read them. They?re fun reads too. They aren?t dry shitty old people stuff either.

AiPT: It sounds like you have a very personal relationship with horror.

Ricky: I love horror, this is what I?m saying. There?s nothing more rewarding than making movies for this fan base. There?s no greater joy you know? These are fans that actually care about the art of making a movie. There?s nothing I?d rather do than make horror movies. My next film is horror, the next after that is horror, that?s all I want to do is be a horror filmmaker. A lot of these filmmakers hopefully we?re trying to re energize horror by kind of like, I don?t know, like making a mash up. We?re making genre hybrids here and we?re trying to get the best out of horror. Excision, as loud as it is, is fairly relevant to all the filmmakers that inspired it you know. We wear a lot of our homage?s on our sleeves. It?s about saying thank you and moving forward.

AiPT: With the deluge of super popular yet crappy horror films in the last 10 years, it makes sense filmmakers like you come up and try to make horror films classier than they?ve been.

Ricky: I get so insulted you know? I?m not a stupid fucking dude. What?s trashy about horror? Why is this considered the junk bin genre? It?s not. I mean, if you just look there are so many people doing such interesting things in horror and they always have been.

I mean, Tod Browning?s Freaks is a response to people coming back from World War 2 with deformities. As horror filmmakers we?re always holding up a mirror to society hopefully. For me it?s the best genre. It?s artistically making points without being too literal. And they are all sort of signs of the time. And there is this energy and they capture the youth and anger. And the outcasts are the heroes. It?s special. I could talk forever about this, I fucking love horror movies.

Why is this considered the junk bin genre? It?s not. I mean, if you just look there are so many people doing such interesting things in horror and they always have been.

AiPT: A lot of horror films feel like they were made by a producer who has 2 million dollars to spend and doesn?t care about making a good film.

Ricky: I don?t get much money to make these things and I fucking make them. I have a little bit more money to make the next one but it ain?t much. Once you get past the agents these actors want to do interesting stuff. Their agents don?t make a killing off it so they very rarely get these projects to their actors. They stop them from the get go. I had a certain amount of luck of casting a lot of my heroes in Excision. It was through perseverance and honestly irritating the shit out of people. If this movie wasn?t successful to whatever degree it is I?d be like, blacklisted by every agency in Hollywood.

AiPT: How do you know you?re not?

Ricky: That?s a good point. Inevitably when you get some success people just?I?m sure I have pissed people off, but not on purpose. The only thing you can do to those people is work harder than them. I gave up everything to make this movie, and I didn?t even know if I would ever get to make another one. I didn?t even know if I was going to be able to finish this one halfway through. Inevitably people are going to be angry, but it?s all about entitlement. Excision is about entitlement. This girl thinks she can do this thing without really learning how to you know? She?s your typical modern teenager. Like some people say, ?Anyone can make a movie? you know, all you need is the camera right? Look. I?m just happy I got to make a goddamn movie.

AiPT: And it?s a good one. Thanks for the time Ricky. Appreciate it.

Ricky: This was awesome. Thanks.

Ricky would like to give a special thanks to Atshan the ?best car mechanic in LA.?

Myanmar must protect Muslims and halt discrimination: U.N.

GENEVA (Reuters) - U.N. human rights investigators called on Myanmar on Wednesday to halt deadly sectarian violence and warned it not to use the conflict as a pretext to remove Rohingya minority Muslims.

Some 89 people have been killed in clashes between Buddhist Rakhines and Muslim Rohingyas in western Myanmar in the past 10 days, according to the latest official toll.

"This situation must not become an opportunity to permanently remove an unwelcome community," said a joint statement issued by Tomas Ojea Quintana, U.N. special rapporteur on Myanmar, and independent experts on minority issues and the internally displaced.

They voiced their "deep concern about the assertion of the government and others that the Rohingya are illegal immigrants and stateless persons".

"If the country is to be successful in the process of democratic transition, it must be bold in addressing the human rights challenges that exist," Ojea Quintana said.

"In the case of Rakhine State, this involves addressing the long-standing endemic discrimination against the Rohingya community that exists within sections of local and national government as well as society at large."

The Rohingyas say their homes were burned down by Rakhines armed with slingshots, wooden staves, knives and gasoline.

The United Nations says more than 97 percent of the 28,108 people who have fled the violence are Muslims, mostly stateless Rohingya. Many now live in camps, joining 75,000 mostly Rohingya displaced in June after a previous explosion of sectarian violence killed at least 80 people.

Fearful Buddhists and Muslims are arming themselves with homemade weapons, testing the reformist government's resolve to prevent a new wave of violence.

Rita Izsak, U.N. independent expert on minority issues, said the Rohingya constituted a minority which must be protected according to international minority rights standards.

"The government must take steps to review relevant laws and procedures to provide equal access by the Rohingya community to citizenship and promote dialogue and reconciliation between communities," she said.

The U.N. refugee agency has called on authorities to restore law and order so as to prevent further bloodshed and displacement. An estimated 6,000 people are stranded on boats or on islets along Myanmar's western coast, it said on Tuesday.

"We are appealing to neighboring countries, Bangladesh being very much one of them, to keep borders open. It is clearly important that people do have access to safe haven," UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards told a news briefing on Tuesday.

Understanding Grief and Loss | aayahanolosha.net

Number of View: 5

Throughout the years, the 5 stages of Reduction and Grief have been well written about and also discussed. In this dissertation, I will elaborate the views that extend on the Bargaining point of grief. Bargaining is the normal reaction to thoughts of helplessness as well as vulnerability after a death of a loved one that is certainly often associated with the have to regain control. Some widespread thoughts associated with dealing can be ?if only we?d sought medical attention sooner,? ?If only we had gotten a second opinion from another doctor,? ?If only I needed tried to be a right now there more?.

Grief

I believe that the amount someone grieves is immediately proportional to the type of relationship the person had for the deceased. Seems like a simple concept, yet, it really is filled with a load of emotional baggage which may be at times hard to evaluate and even harder to be aware of. Often, the person feelings of loss is drowned by a sea of shame and hopelessness. This is one way the mind deals with problem management through loss. This happens because our brain wants to get back to scenario of ?normalcy? as quickly and efficiently as possible and uses control as its vehicle. When something undesirable happens, such as dealing with the loss of a loved one, the very first thing the mind seeks to get is some form of manage. This is usually done through seeking some form of participation as a way to fix the situation. But wait, how can someone ?fix the actual situation? when the person is deceased? It?s not like we now have the powers to get them back to life. This defeat can fall us, make us more hopeless, angry, and depressed. Your head goes into panic function and is desperately in search of a way to gain back a few some control. Therefore, the brain develops feelings associated with guilt as a function of participation. It can be almost the only thing it could do, as a default, because it has nothing in addition. Looking at it nearer, it makes a lot of sense; guilt gives the particular person a senses regarding participation, a sense of carrying out something (though their counterintuitive since the shame is a form of self punishment, it?s still carrying out something and that is an improvement on nothing at all), it?s the best way the psyche understands how to gain back a sense of handle. This guilt, is the psyche?s way of self-medicating itself over the pain of sacrificing someone. Making excessive grieving a accounts of how the person seen the lost 1 and what that individual meant to them. It could be quite humbling to know that this amount of grieving is reflective towards the amount of love and admiration the person had while using deceased. Making the greater the love, the greater and much more difficult the grieving process. Understandably, the space and type of mourning and the degree in how it affects us varies in all people. Often, I find what exactly is most helpful isn?t type of advice one particular gives, or the type of coping mechanism one particular uses. Rather than carrying out something, just resting with the person in their particular pain. Just getting there and allowing the person to go through the required motions they need to in order to make peace and move on. This task is often tougher to grasp and at instances frustrating, and sometimes producing therapy becomes beneficial. Seeking a counselor that will allow the mourner to be able to process their despair properly, work through his or her guilt, and gain a healthy sense of engagement is essential in finding interior peace towards a proper recovery.

Nasty campaign tactics: Phony voting instructions

MIAMI (AP) ? With a week to go until Election Day, the nasty campaign tactics are coming out.

People in Florida, Virginia and Indiana have gotten calls falsely telling them they can vote early by phone and don't need to go to a polling place. In suburban Broward County, Fla., a handful of elderly voters who requested absentee ballots say they were visited by unknown people claiming to be authorized to collect the ballots.

And there's a mysterious DVD popping up in mailboxes that purports to be a documentary raising questions about the true identity of President Barack Obama's father.

It's one more indication of just how close this presidential election is. Voting rights advocates say reports of political deception and underhandedness are on the rise.

"Unfortunately it seems like the shadowy individuals that want to prevent people from voting are doing things earlier," said Eric Marshall, legal mobilization manager at the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The organization is part of a coalition called Election Protection that is monitoring voting access and rights nationwide, including a toll-free hotline set up to take complaints.

"Each American's vote matters. It's important to them and it's important to the community," Marshall said.

Indiana's secretary of state launched an investigation of the phony voting instructions being phoned to homes in that state, and Virginia officials issued a warning to voters there asking them to report any such calls.

In the Broward County, Fla., case, elderly voters "were told, 'I'm an official and I'm here to pick up your absentee ballot,'" said Alma Gonzalez, a senior Florida Democratic Party official working on voter protection efforts. "There is no official who picks up your ballot."

In addition to those cases, garish billboards warning that voter fraud is a crime punishable by jail time and fines were put up in minority neighborhoods in Ohio and Wisconsin. They were recently taken down amid complaints they were aimed at intimidating African-American and Latino voters. The people behind the billboards have not come forward.

"It's hard to believe that these were just public service announcements," Marshall said. "Those neighborhoods were specifically targeted."

"It doesn't pass the smell test."

Independent Florida voter Jane Bowman smelled something bad, too, when she recently discovered a DVD in her mailbox questioning the identity of Obama's father.

"I think it's just a dirty trick. It just astonished me," said Bowman, a Jacksonville resident who says she plans to vote for Obama as she did four years ago. "I think they're doing everything they can to win Florida. It's a sorry situation."

The DVD's director, who says he has mailed some 7 million copies to homes in swing states, says that he is unaffiliated with political campaigns or their supporters and that the film reflects his own painstaking research into Obama's family background.

The DVD, "Dreams from My Real Father," posits that the president's true father was a communist agitator, author and poet living in Hawaii named Frank Marshall Davis ? not the Kenyan man who shares the president's name. Both men are now dead.

The title is a reference to Obama's book about his family history. That book does mention a poet named "Frank" who was a friend of Obama's maternal grandfather.

In an interview, DVD director Joel Gilbert described himself as a nonpartisan independent who seeks only to tell what he views as an extremely important story. Gilbert said he did not coordinate distribution of the DVD with any political entity and also took no political contributions to finance it. Yet the DVD was targeted at voters in key battleground states, including 1.5 million in Florida and 1.2 million in Ohio, according to Gilbert's website.

"It's a publicity measure," he said of the free mail distribution. "This has been an effort to force and embarrass the media into covering the content of the film."

Gilbert declined to disclose how the DVD and its distribution were financed, saying his production company is private and not required to. He has also made what he calls "mockumentaries" exploring whether former Beatle Paul McCartney might really be dead ? as was rumored in the 1960s ? and finding Elvis Presley alive and living as a federal agent in Southern California. He has also done films on Islamic-Jewish relations and Iran's strategic ambitions.

Obama campaign spokesman Adam Fetcher declined comment on the DVD.

Another mysterious batch of mailings to voters in at least 23 Florida counties is being investigated by the FBI and state officials. These anonymous letters, which were postmarked from Seattle, raise questions about the voter's citizenship and provide a form that supposedly must immediately be filled out and returned to elections officials. Otherwise, the letter says, the voter's name will be purged from the rolls.

"A nonregistered voter who casts a vote in the State of Florida may be subject to arrest, imprisonment, and/or other criminal sanctions," warns one of the official-looking letters complete with eagle-and-flag logo, which appear to have been aimed mainly at registered Republicans.

Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner has asked all of the state's supervisors of elections to report any similar letters. There could also be federal charges against those responsible.

Voting rights advocates also say there have been scattered complaints of bosses ordering employees to support a particular presidential candidate or face job repercussions. And in the past, students and other groups have been the targets of robocalls falsely saying they can vote on the day after Election Day if the lines are too long.

Marshall said such misinformation tactics surface election after election because it's not illegal in most states to deceive someone about the timing or place of an election, or to lie about a candidate's political affiliation. Most laws, he said, are more geared toward preventing voter intimidation and ensuring physical access to polling places. Those who do get caught in deception usually claim it was all a big misunderstanding.

"It's very difficult to stop," he said. "The tactics have evolved but the law hasn't."

The science behind Hurricane Sandy: a confluence of trouble

WASHINGTON?

?Hurricane Sandy seems straight out of a Hollywood apocalyptic blockbuster. But a confluence of environmental and topographical characteristics helps explain its vast size, slow progress, storm surge and multiple methods of wreaking havoc on the coast and deep inland, scientists say.

Sandy began as a big storm when it formed in the Caribbean, said Katie Garrett, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. It grew as it moved north into the mid-Atlantic, fed by unseasonably warm waters.

Sandy stretches about 940 miles ? greater than the distance from New York to Atlanta ? said Jeff Masters, co-founder of WeatherUnderground.com and a former flight meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's hurricane hunters. Sandy is the largest such storm to make landfall on the Eastern Seaboard since 1988, when the government acquired the satellite technology and aircraft to start measuring the size of storms.

PHOTOS: Hurricane Sandy approaches

Sandy's course, from southeast to northwest, is not typical, said Rick Knabb, director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Although its path is "not 100% unprecedented," it is unusual for a storm of such size and strength to move inland so late in the year, Knabb said during a telephone news conference Monday.

Even when Atlantic storms come ashore, they usually head back out to sea. Some powerful storms in recent years did not make landfall at all, kept away by weather patterns. But Sandy was pushed into the mid-Atlantic states and New England because a high-pressure system near Greenland blocked its progress eastward.

That shift toward the northwest put Sandy on course to mesh with a cold front that began in California last week and marched across the country, creating what Knabb and others say is an unprecedented weather threat. The force of the eastward-moving front slowed Sandy, Garrett said, changing the hurricane into a nor'easter.

MAP: Hurricane Sandy barrels in

Even before coming ashore, Sandy had begun to lose traits typical of tropical storms, such as thunderstorms at its middle, Garrett said. Instead, Sandy's merger with the cold front threatened to cause severe snow in places. In West Virginia, 3 to 4 feet were predicted in some areas, with less snow in southwestern Virginia and western North Carolina.

"It's not just a tropical storm, but a windstorm, a snowstorm," Garrett said.

Sandy also has produced dramatic storm surges. The swirling movement of its winds created a big bulge of water that typically moves to a storm's center. There, the low pressure in the atmosphere acts like a straw and pulls the water levels even higher, Masters said. If a storm is farther out to sea, that bulge eventually sinks. But because Sandy moved to shallower waters near the coast, that bulge had nowhere to go but toward shore, he said.

PHOTOS: Massive U.S. storms -- Frankenstorm, Snowpocalypse and more

The slowness of the storm meant it could sit over the East Coast through several high tide cycles. Scientists were predicting 10- to 11-foot storm surges, including high tide conditions, in places like New York and New Jersey. Monday night's full moon threatened to add another foot to the surge, Knabb said. Finally, many inlets and bays in the mid-Atlantic are funnel-shaped, which means water can surge in easily, but getting out is a challenge.

Knabb said he didn't expect water levels to return to normal until Wednesday.

How to Train Your Facebook News Feed - Automotive Digest

How to Train Your Facebook News?Feed

facebook_6_9_2009-11_53_am.jpg

By JD Rucker

The one thing that Face?book does excep?tion?ally well from a tech?nol?ogy per?spec?tive is oper?at?ing and mod?i?fy?ing their news feed algo?rithm. Learn how to take advan?tage of it to dis?play exactly what (and who) you want to appear on your news?feed.

The news feed algo?rithm is a tech?no?log?i?cal work of art in many ways. One of the best parts about it is that you can train yours to present you with the right con?tent from the right peo?ple. Here?s how:

??Check Your Friends (and par?tic?u?larly the order they?re in)
When you got to your list of friends on Face?book which you can find at ?facebook.com/username/friends, you should see the most famil?iar faces right at the top. While it?s not an exact list?ing in per?fect order, it?s a loose inter?pre?ta?tion of how Face?book feels you rank your friends in order of impor?tance. The order of the list changes often based upon who is post?ing lately, whose posts you?ve liked lately, and any?thing that you?ve shared or com?mented on.

??Clas?si?fy?ing Your Friends
This is the easy part. Face?book makes it very sim?ple to clas?sify the peo?ple in your life into var?i?ous groups.

Sim?ply hover over their name. Their pro?file infor?ma?tion will pop up. Then, hover over the ?Friends? but?ton and your lists pop up. Face?book gives spe?cial treat?ment to ?Close Friends? and ?Fam?ily?, so the impor?tant peo?ple in your life should be clas?si?fied as?such.

You can take it a step fur?ther and add them to other lists. You should do this with all of your friends when?ever pos?si?ble, par?tic?u?larly if you use Face?book a lot and for dif?fer?ent rea?sons such as work, pol?i?tics,?etc.

??Like Sculpt?ing
Select the friends and fam?ily mem?bers who you really like a lot. It?s not nec?es?sar?ily a com?par?i?son to real life; if Uncle Dweezil is your favorite but he posts inces?sant pic?tures of his dogs and mar?i?juana plants that you don?t want to see all the time, don?t include him.

Once you have your win?ners, open their pro?files and start lik?ing away. Stay true ? don?t just ran?domly click on every?thing they post just for the sake of sculpt?ing. If they?re post?ing enough and they?re truly peo?ple you want to fol?low, you should be able to find things that they posted that match your inter?ests. If you don?t, per?haps it?s time to recon?sider the friendship.

Remem?ber, it?s not just a mat?ter of vol?ume. Per?cent?age of posts liked plays a major role, so if you have a loosely active friend who you want to see in your news feed, you can like sev?eral of their things and they should always appear on top when they posts. In other words, those who aren?t Facebook-addicts can still get pref?er?en?tial treat?ment in your news?feed.

??Lastly, do the same thing with Pages.
The posts on the pages you?ve liked in the past will never appear in your feed if you don?t like some of what they post. This is a good time to go through all of the pages you?ve liked and unlike the ones that you don?t really fol?low any?more. The ones that you do want to fol?low ? like away! Some of the best con?tent on Face?book comes from active pages.

The Search For Cheap Boats | recreation and sports blog updates ...

Only very few can forget their first ever experience in sailing. Most of the time, this will be a treasured experience. This is why when people grow up to a good old age, somehow someway, there is the urge to buy a watercraft, even with just some cheap boats.

In the quest to purchase a watercraft, many things are to be considered. This is not something people could trifle with because the fact remains that getting out in the water is riskier than being on dry ground. This means that it is important to get a good water vessel to be safe. It must be one that is free of serious problems.

Of course, if there are a lot of choices, a person would always choose one that is brand new. The problem is, brand new boats are very expensive. Nobody needs to ask the price to know that it is. It is for this reason that some would just settle for the used ones or the cheap ones.

Choosing used boats can be tricky. Thinking about it can already be tricky, let alone starting the process of really hunting for one. Good thing this article will discuss some of the more important things on how to purchase a water vessel.

The very first to consider when buying a water vessel is to know to what extent will this be used. For example, if the person is going to use it for the mere reason of sailing, like the relaxing, slow sailing one can do in the weekend, then a boat that is not so fast can already suffice. However, when this is to be used for water sports, then it will need greater power and speed.

If this is going to be used for transportation of goods or people, then it does not really need to be fast but rather powerful. There may be a need to let it go fast but there will also be a greater need to have the cargo safely delivered.

After knowing what its purpose is, the next thing to know is where it is going to sail. This means the body of water it is going to travel on. Naturally, bigger bodies of water will need bigger boats while a small boat can be used in small body of water. This is important because the price of the vessel will somehow be parallel with its size.

Getting the right answers to these two considerations can get you to start the actual process of hunting for cheap boats. The search will be narrower now and it may be better for the actual inspection of the unit.

No Nexus (yet) today? Catch up on Windows Phone 8 instead

Yeah, yeah. Everybody's waiting on pins and needles to see what (if anything) Google's going to announce today, given that the Nexus event in New York City was canceled because of Hurricane Sandy.

Nexus ain't the only game in town today, though. We're Android through and through, but we also like shiny new toys as much as anyone. So we're going to be kibitzing on WPCentral's coverage of the Windows Phone 8 launch.

Frankly, I'm more than a little interested, given how impressed I've been so far with Windows 8.

So head on over to WPCentral, and let's see what's what. But don't forget to swing back by these here parts -- we've got a feeling it won't be an entirely quiet afternoon.

Romney calls for cooperation in Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is calling for more partisan cooperation in Washington as he rallies supporters in Florida.

Romney says this is not a time to divide the country or demonize political opponents, but to, quote, "build bridges" to the other party.

The comments came before thousands of supporters who packed the Pensacola Civic Center. It's the first of three stops Romney planned for Florida Saturday.

Romney's been toning down conservative rhetoric as he courts women and independents as Election Day looms.

But the moderate tone did not last long.

Romney said that Obama is "shrinking from the magnitude of the times" by focusing on "small things." He also said that the president has shrunk from the promises he made as a candidate.

A glimpse at Sebastian Vettel's career with Red Bull Racing - Bettor

A glimpse at Sebastian Vettel?s career with Red Bull Racing ? Formula 1 news

Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel has been considered as one of the most talented drivers in F1 as he has won two world championship titles just at the age of 24.

Vettel joined Red Bull in 2009 and performed convincingly well throughout the season. He claimed first ever pole position for the Milton Keynes based team and came second in the drivers? championship.

Later in 2010, he performed tremendously well even after facing some technical issues in his car. Moreover, he had a tough fight with his teammate, Mark Webber, nevertheless, he managed to claim five grands prix victories and emerged as the youngest ever F1 champion.

In 2011, he impressed everyone with his amazing performances and claimed his second consecutive championship title after completely dominating the season as he won 11 races and secured 15 pole positions.

The veteran German driver has not been able to dominate in the current season as compared to preceding one as the defending champions faced difficulties with their car?s design because of the changes in the rules and regulations by FIA.

Although, he struggled during the last pre-season test and few of the races this year, nonetheless, he is not feeling disappointed and is positively looking forward to win this year?s championship title.

In addition, he said that he has full faith in his team and they are trying their best to come up stronger in the forthcoming races so as to defend their title.

?Just because you know how to do it or you did it once or twice it's still a big challenge every year to win the championship,? he said. ?Obviously this year has been very much up and down for most of us and there's still a lot of races to come so far there's nothing that speaks against the fact that it will stay unpredictable and hard to know on Thursday or Friday what will happen on Sunday, and hard to know at the beginning of the race what's going to happen in the last ten laps, so it's very exciting for us.?

It will be interesting to see how the two-time world champion performs in the remainder of the season.

The Holidays Are Coming : Dr Wendy Schwartz ? Family and ...

Getting ready for the holiday season can be a mixture of fun, anxiety, joy and sadness.? It is easy to fall into a pattern of dealing with the holidays in the same way each year, so it may be a good time to consider a fresh approach and take steps to make preparations as straightforward and stress free as possible.? One of the key things to remember is to have realistic expectations of the holiday season.? If a movie-style, perfect celebration with complete family harmony, a beautifully decorated home and everyone?s dream present under the tree is the goal then it is likely that disappointment and stress will be a big part of the next few months.? By emphasizing the fun of the season, and limiting the desire to emulate magazine picture perfection, it is more likely that the journey to holiday time will be an enjoyable one.

For some people the holidays bring sadness, for others celebration.? There should be space for reflection alongside the activities and preparations. It is natural to miss absent friends and family at this time of year and that should be acknowledged, but it does not need to be the dominant theme of the holidays.? There are many things that friends, family and the community can do to make it a special and positive time together.? Decorate the home to get into the holiday spirit; it need not be the type of decorations on display in big store windows.? It can be more enjoyable to create a personal touch with materials from the garden, local woodland or hand made craft decorations constructed by children or friends.? Make a social occasion of the decorating and invite people or other children to join in with the creativity.? Personalized decorations give great pleasure and bring back lovely memories when they are brought out each year at holiday time.

Other ways to enjoy the build up to the holidays and keep stress at bay include baking for others, donating to goodwill and doing kind deeds.? Look for ways to help people in the community who may find the holiday season tough.? Choose a good cause and donate time, money or materials to help their holiday campaign.? If a different perspective on the season will help to minimize anxiety in the build up to the holidays then plan a quick trip and use the time and space for reflection and renewal.? It may help to call someone in your past and touch base or discuss issues that have been a cause of anxiety through the year.? Time for reflection can also provide an opportunity to rewrite short term and long term goals, enabling a more motivated start to the New Year.

The holidays can provide an opportunity for busy parents to spend quality time with family.?? Friends may find time to reunite and the community can come together in celebration.? There may be the chance for personal challenges from participating in new activities, interests or hobbies this holiday season.? Exploring, staying curious and trying new things are what keeps life interesting and stimulates personal growth.? The holiday season may be a busy time but that is not an excuse to ignore the opportunity to learn and develop.? Alongside reflection there should be time for a little fun, joy and pleasure in the simple things like playing a little holiday music to get in the mood while baking, decorating and wrapping presents.? Whatever the holidays bring, have a happy, joyful and peaceful time along the way!

First Person: A Supportive Partner Makes All the Difference when Fighting Breast Cancer

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Yahoo News asked women who have had breast cancer or are going through treatment to write about the people in their lives who stood by them and cared for them. Here's one story.

FIRST PERSON | It was Feb. 19, 2007, when I was told I had breast cancer.

I was just 32, with two children, Adam, 4, and Kaitlyn, 14, and a marriage that was close to ending after 15 years. We were living in Hillsborough, N.C., and moving to Efland.

Little did we know that move was a blessing in disguise for our whole family.

My husband, Kenny, and I had been having a lot of issues for a few years, most of them financial. We had started renting to own a home from a "friend," and things were going well until he unexpectedly re-financed the house and our payment went up almost $400 a month. We tried to keep up, but we couldn't, so we moved into a smaller home. This caused a lot more tension in between us, and it was almost the straw that broke up the marriage.

One day after moving, I was putting a box in the top of the closet and felt something "out of place" on the outside of my left breast. I mentioned it to my husband, and he told me to make a doctor's appointment. Well, I brushed it aside but then Kaitlyn wanted to play soccer and had to have a physical so I figured I'd make myself an appointment too just to see what our doctor thought.

On my 32nd birthday, I went to see our family doctor. As soon as he felt it, he sent me for a mammogram the next day--Valentine's Day. Kenny, Adam and I went to the imaging center at Duke. I thought it would be a cyst or something less severe, so why not bring my son along instead of finding a babysitter? Based on the imaging from the mammogram and ultrasound they all but said, "It's cancer." I was sent the next day to have a biopsy.

We got the call Monday afternoon. My husband answered, our family doc had called, and was told it was stage II intraductal carcinoma. I was in complete shock. My husband held me and let me cry. Starting that day, our relationship changed for the better. I always joked that cancer saved my marriage. But, in all reality, it did.

Kenny never missed a doctor's appointment, which is one of the greatest things about having a good partner during this time. With chemotherapy, you will develop something called chemo brain. Yes, it is real! He remembered all the details from the appointments.

In March, I started chemotherapy. I would go every other week over an 18-week period, nine total rounds. A lot of those doctor's appointments, especially chemo days, were very long days and if he weren't there to keep me company I would've gone insane. We laughed, we talked, we spent a lot of time together, and got to know each other again. We learned to love again because you never know when tragedy can strike. And if he weren't there, I don't know who would've gone to get me french fries. He really was my rock. When I doubted I could do anymore or just needed to cry, he was always there and always telling me we would get through this. July 11, 2007, was my last day of chemo. I was so happy to have that part of it behind us but there was still more to go.

I am a stay-at-home mom, so my job is to cook, clean and take care of my family. I just didn't have the energy to do that. But thanks to my wonderful husband and completely awesome daughter, I didn't have to worry about that stuff at all. Another perk to having a supportive partner is that they understand you just can't do a lot of what you are used to doing when you're so exhausted from fighting cancer. And if ever you need to take time for yourself, it is during this time! My house got cleaned, food got served and kids got taken care of and that took a lot off of my worried mind!

After I had my bilateral mastectomy on Aug. 9, I thought I was a freak. I couldn't do reconstruction right away, so here I was, a 32-year-old woman walking around with no breasts. I thought, "That's a big part of what makes me a woman, now what?" But I was so wrong about that and Kenny let me know how wrong I was. I tell everyone if I had any doubt about how much he loved me this is when it all went away. I couldn't take a shower or a bath for a few days after and I had these drain tubes that had to be emptied twice a day, which I couldn't do on my own. My wonderfully supportive husband emptied my drains, measured the drainage and basically bathed me. If he didn't love me I don't think that would have ever happened. Today, we have been married almost 19 years and are happier than we've ever been. I know that sounds clich?, but it's the truth. We let the little things go now and just love each other. It's not always sunshine and lollipops. But we're together, and we're living and loving every day.

So I guess what I am saying here is there are so many areas in your life where you will need that supportive partner to help you fight cancer and to keep you going. Whether it's keeping up with appointments, remembering what the doctor says, making you laugh, getting you french fries or just holding you, you need a supportive partner. It could be a sibling, a parent, even an adult child but you need someone. No one should go through this difficult, terrible journey on her own; it's just too much for one person. I really like the term co-survivor because that is what you are doing: You are surviving this together.

93% The Sessions

All Critics (84) | Top Critics (32) | Fresh (78) | Rotten (6)

Most often with The Sessions the blunt comedy outweighs the drift toward sanctimony.

It sends viewers out of the theater with a heightened sense of the physical and a real feeling for all the things that sex means in human life.

The achievement of this simply told, exceptionally fine film is the clarity with which it portrays the drama of a good soul in an inert body.

Hawkes' performance is the must-see hook of The Sessions, but Hunt gives this funny, touching movie its soul.

Character actor John Hawkes is often cast as a frightening rustic (Winter's Bone, Martha Marcy May Marlene), but he gives a tender and witty performance here as Mark O'Brien.

The joy of The Sessions goes beyond sexual healing. It makes physical intimacy far more a matter of the heart, and you won't be alone wiping an occasional tear.

The film greatly benefits from Hawkes' tremendous performance. (Full Content Review for Parents also available)

For the entire endeavor to emotionally register, you must buy into the romance that purportedly blossoms between Hawkes and Hunt. I didn't, not for a second.

Hawkes' work here is that good that it carries one away on a wave of emotion that dismisses critical thought. The film around him could have been better but you're unlikely to realize that while you're watching it.

...a perfectly watchable showcase for two undeniably above-average performances.

Uneven and perhaps a little too tidy as it aims to promote one man's extraordinary spirit. It is John Hawkes and Helen Hunt, however, who are most worth seeing.

Practically ignores everything about O'Brien's life except as it relates to his sexual odyssey, turning the life of the man into little more than a curio.

A powerful expression of our common needs, fears, and consolations.

For better and for worse, The Sessions has 'crowd-pleaser' written all over it.

Neither an issue-pushing disability drama or a crude, American Polio-style sex comedy, The Sessions is sweet and winning - 'feel good' minus the fingers down the throat.

Another dynamite vehicle for John Hawkes, in which Lewin's affecting script overcomes his pedestrian direction.

Cartoonist Ali Farzat says fear defeated in Syria

CAIRO (Reuters) - Cartoonist Ali Farzat's hand glides over the paper, once more creating the images of defiance he says have helped mobilize Syrians to revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Just over 12 months ago, the Syrian was kidnapped, beaten and burned in an attack he blamed on Syrian security police trying to silence him and stop him drawing the caricatures that protesters have waved aloft as they took to the streets.

His hands were smashed and he suffered facial burns, temporary loss of his eyesight and multiple broken bones.

One of Syria's most famous artists, Farzat earned recognition in the Arab world and beyond for stinging cartoons of Arab leaders such as Libya's Muammar Gaddafi and Iraq's Saddam Hussein and finally, Assad.

Farzat, 60, escaped to Kuwait to recuperate. Now in Egypt, which overthrew its own president in an 18 day uprising in 2011, Farzat told Reuters he was determined to continue his work and support those still seeking to topple Assad 19 months after they began.

"Everyday the revolution inches a step forward. I am very optimistic. Do you see anyone turning back?," he said, proudly gesturing with his hands to show they were back in action.

"Fear has been defeated in Syria when the people marched 19 months ago against tyranny.

"I began to directly draw people in power including Assad and his government officials, to break the barrier of fear, that chronic fear that Syrians suffered from for 50 years."

One of his first cartoons portraying Assad - long a taboo in Syria - showed the president reluctantly ripping a page off a calendar on Thursday, knowing that Friday would bring another wave of popular protests to the streets of Syria.

In another, Assad tries to hitch a lift with Gaddafi, and a third shows Assad beside a large armchair, unable to sit down because the springs have broken.

Demonstrators carried banners of his work as new-found expressions of resistance. Farzat, who works for Kuwait's al-Watan newspaper, has been denied entry into Iraq, Libya, Jordan and Oman because of his work.

TANK SKETCH

The uprising against Assad, whose family has ruled Syria in autocratic fashion for four decades, began as a peaceful protest but now has degenerated into civil war. More than 32,000 Syrians have been killed.

A temporary ceasefire is due to come into effect on Friday.

Farzat said Assad initially tried to get him and other Syrian artists on his side, promising reforms to all but, he said, setting up a system of patronage to win the loyalty of some and exclude those who resisted him.

"On a personal level we found Assad contradictory. One day, we would speak and agree on a specific issue. The next day we would find out he had changed his mind," said Farzat, recalling the day he decided to take on Assad in his work.

"Satirizing a dictator empowers the masses. It strengthens them and undermines their enemy," he said.

Assad says he is pursing reforms, including a parliamentary election held in May, but the opposition says they are meaningless without genuine participation.

Sitting on his desk in a building overlooking Tahrir square, the heart of the uprising in Egypt, Farzat sketches on white paper. A tiny bird emerges, chipping and breaking off the head of an axe that sticks out of a Syrian military fatigues, a symbol of Assad's power.

He quickly draws a tank unable to roll over a flower, blocking the tank from moving forward. These sketches and others will be showcased in his independent magazine Al-Domari, meaning the Lamp Lighter, which he plans to relaunch in Egypt.

The magazine, which was founded in 2000 during a brief period of media freedom, was forced to shut down by Assad's government in 2003.

"The magazine's purpose is gradually remove the darkness that befell our Arab world," said Farzat.

He hopes to form a symposium with young artists and cartoonists in Egypt to support the art movement that grew out of Egypt's uprising.

"These cartoons stem from the sorrows of people. They give them courage and determination," said Farzat.
