MIDDLETON, Wis. (AP) ? Remember Roseanne Roseannadana? Or Emily Litella? Or Baba Wawa?

Younger generations might not recognize the characters popularized by comedian Gilda Radner. Nor might they remember Radner herself, an original cast member of "Saturday Night Live" who died 23 years ago and for whom a national cancer support group is named.

That's troubling to the Madison-area chapter of Gilda's Club, which decided to change its name in part because of concern that many don't know who Radner was. But the move prompted outrage from some Radner fans ? who saw it as a slight to a woman who confronted cancer with dignity and humor ? and led other chapters across the nation to hastily reaffirm they have absolutely no intention of changing their names.

Lannia Syren Stenz, the Madison-area club's executive director, said her organization decided to change its name to Cancer Support Community Southwest Wisconsin after it realized that most college students were born after Radner died in 1989.

"We are seeing younger and younger adults who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis," Stenz told the Wisconsin State Journal. "We want to make sure that what we are is clear to them and that there's not a lot of confusion that would cause people not to come in our doors."

Her comments angered some Radner fans, who let loose a storm of criticism on the organization's Facebook page.

"The only educating you're doing is teaching kids that when they die from cancer, their name will be erased from history in 20 years because the next generation doesn't know who they are. Way to give them hope!" wrote Mark Warneke, 44, a full-time college student in Arlington, Texas.

He told The Associated Press that taking Radner's name off the foundation was an insult to her memory.

Stenz referred questions from the AP to Linda House, executive vice president of the national group. House said there was no evidence that young people are unfamiliar with Radner and the name change was motivated by the desire to make the organization's mission clear. She called Stenz's comments "not accurate, period."

"Gilda Radner is very much a part of the fiber of this organization," House said. "There has never been an intent and there is no intent to lose Gilda as part of the organization."

Stenz's club held a ceremony Thursday to mark the name change, which will be phased it over the next month.

Radner, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986, sought support from The Wellness Community in California and wrote about her experience in her book "It's Always Something," a reference to one of her characters' catch-phrases.

Her friends and family started Gilda's Club in 1991 on the East Coast to honor her legacy. The name was inspired by something Radner said after her diagnosis: "Having cancer gave me membership in an elite club I'd rather not belong to."

Gilda's Club Worldwide merged with The Wellness Community in 2009, and the joint headquarters in Washington changed its name to the Cancer Support Community. Local chapters were given the choice of keeping their names or switching to Cancer Support Community, House said.

The 56 chapters around the world deliver $40 million a year in free care to about 1 million cancer patients and their families, she said. Of those chapters, 20 are known as Gilda's Club, three are Wellness Community and 23 are Cancer Support Community.

Changing the chapters' names made sense to Ron Nief, a professor at Beloit College in southern Wisconsin who has made a career out of studying how different generations view the world differently. He said it could become harder for Gilda's Club to attract donations as fewer people remember seeing Radner on TV.

"I think we all want to keep our traditions alive," he said, "but there comes a reality in this case of what does this group represent and how do we raise money for it."

Radner's husband, actor Gene Wilder, said he didn't like the name change but he understood it. He said if he had to break the news to his late wife she might ask, "Do they have to throw me out?"

"I'd say, 'It's not throwing you out, honey, it's getting more money.' And she'd say, 'OK, I guess if they have to, they have to,'" he said. "It's too bad. I wish it weren't so. But I understand."

The Wellness Center where Radner once sought support in Los Angeles was one of the groups that updated its name. Julia Forth, the marketing director of what's now called the Cancer Support Community Benjamin Center, said people who get sick Google the word cancer, so it helps to have that word in the name.

Other organizations were adamant about keeping the Gilda's Club name. LauraJane Hyde, who runs the Chicago chapter, said her group has spent 15 years teaching people that Radner's name was synonymous with cancer support, in the same way people know what Starbucks sells even though "coffee" isn't in its name.

"A lot of people feel very passionately about the name," she said. "We will lose donations if we change it."

Radner remains a strong presence at the Madison-area club even without her name on the building in the suburb of Middleton. Paintings and drawings of Radner line the walls. One depicts her on top of Madison's state Capitol. Another imagines her sitting along the shores of Lake Mendota on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

The meeting rooms are named after her Saturday Night Live characters, including New York-street smart reporter Roseanne Roseannadana, out-of-sync editorialist Emily Litella and speech-impeded talk show host Baba Wawa, a parody of Barbara Walters.

Updated 7:30 p.m. ET: Troubled "Mean Girls" actress Lindsay Lohan was arrested at a Manhattan nightclub overnight on an assault charge after she allegedly got into a confrontation with another club patron, police say.

Lindsay Lohan leaves the 10th precinct in New York after being arrested early Thursday morning.

The police source said Lohan made no comments to police when she was taken to the 10th precinct early Thursday except to ask for an attorney.

Her lawyer, Mark Heller, later said in a statement that his client "is a victim of someone trying to capture their 15 minutes of fame." He added that he is confident that Lohan would be exonerated.

The 26-year-old actress received a desk appearance ticket and left the station shortly before 8 a.m., wearing leggings, a miniskirt and a black jacket covering her head.

She got into a black SUV with another man and a driver and the car sped off.?Calls to Lohan's publicist were not immediately returned.?Her next court date was not known.

Hours later, Lohan was charged in California for a June crash in which her Porsche slammed into a dump truck. In that crash, the actress got into the wreck on her way to a movie set. She was taken to the hospital but returned to the set of the film, "Liz and Dick," hours later.

Lohan has run into numerous problems in New York in recent months.?She was involved in a NYPD investigation in September after alleging a man had assaulted her in a New York hotel, but charges against the man were later dropped.

Also in September, the actress was accused of clipping a man with her car outside another Manhattan nightclub, but prosecutors chose not to move ahead with charges.

In May, she was cleared of allegations that she struck a Hollywood nightclub manager with her car.

Lohan remains on informal probation for taking a necklace from a jewelry store without permission last year. That means she doesn't have to check in with a judge or probation officer but could face a jail term if arrested again.

Her latest film, "Liz & Dick," in which she portrays screen icon Elizabeth Taylor, premiered on Lifetime on Sunday.

Lohan also recently filmed "The Canyons," an indie film written by "Less Than Zero" and "American Psycho" author Bret Easton Ellis.?

Should Health Care for the Very Poor Be a Fast-Growth Business ...

NEW DELHI ? Health care experts, investors and government officials gathered at New Delhi?s Habitat Center on Friday to discuss one of the most promising new investment areas in India: affordable health care.

You?d be forgiven for finding the name a bit confusing ? after all, who wants health care that isn?t affordable, no matter how much money you have? The term here refers to health care for those at the ?bottom of the pyramid? ? in other words, poor people.

India is viewed as one of this new industry?s most exciting markets, as Jyoti Pande Lavakare wrote on India Ink this week, in part because there are so many people here who are not receiving adequate health care: the industry aims at the 835 million people in India earning less than 250 rupees, or $4.50, per day.

?We can?t think of a more important sector with greater social impact than affordable health care in India,? Jasjit Mangat, director of investment at the Omidyar Network, told Ms. Pande Lavakare. Private-sector annual revenues, he estimates, could be up to $20 billion in India alone.

But behind the excitement about the promised growth of the industry lies a fundamental question that needs to be addressed: Should providing health care to very poor people be a business at all?

The venture capital community?s move into the affordable health care business is just the latest example of the ?doing well by doing good? phenomenon. Some companies and investment funds have embraced the notion in recent years that being socially responsible and caring for employees also helps boost profits. The idea has been touted by Harvard Business School professors and? debated by the likes of Bill Gates and Larry Summers.

Entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, under the umbrella of ?doing well by doing good,? have particularly seized on the idea of ?impact investing,? or applying a businesslike approach to what may once have been a charitable enterprise. Expecting a definite return, whether it?s profit or tangible results, helps ensure that funds and services get more efficiently to those who need them and ensures that they keep coming, they say.

Enthusiasm for this approach, and a significant amount of money along with it, reached a peak recently in India with the for-profit microfinance industry. The end result, though, was disaster: dozens of women committed suicide after being pushed into loans they could not repay.

For-profit groups? jump into the industry led to its collapse in India, Lydia Polgreen and Vikas Bajaj wrote in November of 2010:

Vijay Mahajan, the chairman of Basix, an organization that provides loans and other services to the poor, acknowledged that many lenders grew too fast and lent too aggressively. Investments by private equity firms and the prospect of a stock market listing drove firms to increase lending as fast as they could, he said.

?In their quest to grow,? he said, ?they kept piling on more loans in the same geographies.? He added, ?That led to more indebtedness, and in some cases it led to suicides.?

The biggest proponent of for-profit microfinance in India, Vikram Akula, founder of S.K.S. Microsystems, subsequently admitted that his approach was a mistake.

?Bringing private capital into social enterprise was much harder than I anticipated,? he said at a Harvard University conference. Mr. Akula blamed his own ?focus on scaling S.K.S.?s model? without anticipating the ?potential downside? ? in other words, trying to grow the business without looking at the harmful consequences of pushing for growth.

At Friday?s conference on affordable health care in Delhi, there are sessions titled ?From Product to Market? and ?Rethink Access,? but nothing on what a reasonable rate of growth is to keep the industry ethical, or how investors plan to ensure that poor people will not be pressured into spending money on health care they don?t need.

For the affordable health care industry to truly become one, these are issues that need to be thoroughly addressed, experts say.

?It is all very well for companies to come in to invest in any social sector, so long as they are willing to temper their expectations and earn a reasonable return,? said Sanjay Sinha, the managing director of M-CRIL, a microcredit rating agency based in Gurgaon, India.

But affordable health care enthusiasts, like any social investors, should learn from the microfinance industry?s troubles, he said. ?Usually these companies get so excited about the growth opportunities that they think growth can go on forever,? he said, ?and that?s where problems arise.?

Keepin' it real fake pay peanuts, get a WPflavored lemon

Either this latest KIRF contender apes Windows Phone to a seriously piratical degree, or someone has simply chopped in a screengrab from an HTC device. Either way, the aptly-named Lemon T109 could at least have tried mimicking the latest version of Redmond's mobile OS instead of Mango. The handset, which has just popped up in India for the equivalent of $54, accepts a pair of SIMs and boasts a 3.7-inch HVGA capacitive touch display. There's a "long" 1,200mAh battery that helps fuel features like the King Movie Player, an automatic call recorder and a 1.3-megapixel snapper circa 2004. We're not sure what the "PC Tablet" accessory refers to, but the free wristwatch on offer could possibly help sweeten the citrusy deal -- especially since the other core specs are MIA. The phone may not look like it's going to smoke anything, but if you're in the area and desperate for vitamins after all that fried bacon, a tap on the source link might just help you meet your match.

Animoto turns Facebook photos into 'Best of 2012' videos

Animoto, the app that turns Facebook photos into slideshow videos, added a highlight reel feature today that lets users create videos based on their most popular photos of the year.

The magic behind the highlight reel is Facebook's Open Graph. Animoto pulls the photos and captions from your profile -- these include ones you posted and those you're tagged in -- based on how many times your friends commented or liked them, or how many people were tagged in it. The videos are set to music and can include text.

The result, Animoto CEO Brad Jefferson said, is a video of the most memorable moments of your year. "It's going to make you cry if it's a birth of a child; it's going to make you happy if it's a high school adrenaline rush type of thing," he said.

The new "best of" feature launches just as the holiday season kicks off. Jefferson said the company chose this time because many people create and share holiday videos this time of year.

Animoto debuted its iOS app last year during the holidays for the same reason, but what sets the highlight reel feature apart is that the app automatically chooses your most popular photos for you. You can still choose the music and theme, as well as swap out any photos you don't want in the video before sharing it.

Facebook released a similar app to encourage people to switch over to the Timeline format. The Timeline Movie Maker pulls photos and videos to create a video of a user's entire Timeline and sets it to music. While the Timeline app has more of a cinematic feel to it, you can't tweak it or personalize it with text.

Animoto users have created more than 30 million videos since the company started in 2006. The company, which has raised $30 million, has 60 employees and is headquartered in New York; it also has a San Francisco office. While users can make an unlimited number of 30-second or shorter videos for free, they have to pay a subscription fee to make longer videos. Jefferson said the idea behind the business model is that people will pay for quality content and services. Animoto has 5 million registered users with 150,000 subscribers.

"As long it has value, we find that people are willing to pay for it," Jefferson said.

This story was updated at 12:31 p.m. PT to fix a typo in the amount of money Animoto has raised. It's raised $30 million.

Large Hadron Collider may have produced a previously undetected form of matter

Large Hadron Collider may have produced previously unconfirmed form of matter

Teams at the Large Hadron Collider must be developing a knack for producing tangible evidence of theoretical particles. After orchestrating 2 million collisions between lead nuclei and protons, like the sort you see above, the collider's Compact Muon Solenoid group and researchers at MIT suspect that stray, linked pairs of gluon particles in the mix were signs of color-glass condensate, a currently theory-only form of matter that sees gluons travel in liquid-like, quantum-entangled waves. The clues aren't definitive, but they were also caught unexpectedly as part of a more routine collision run; the team is curious enough that it's looking for more evidence during weeks of similar tests in January. Any conclusive proof of the condensate would have an impact both on how we understand particle production in collisions as well as the ways gluons and quarks are arranged inside protons. If so, the CMS and MIT teams may well answer a raft of questions about subatomic physics while further justifying CERN's giant underground rings.

The Truth About Microsoft?s Windows Phone Sales (MSFT)

Steve Ballmer

Steve Ballmer got the twittersphere buzzing by pronouncing that Windows Phone is selling four times faster than it was a year ago.

He was speaking at Microsoft?s annual shareholder meeting today.

That certainly sounds impressive.

But a dive into the numbers shows that total volume is still pretty low. Microsoft sold 2.8 million Windows phones in the year-ago fourth quarter, as reported market research firm Gartner at the time.

By the third quarter of this year, it was doing better, having sold 4 million phones.

But Apple sold 35 million phones in the same quarter that Microsoft sold 2.8 million. Apple also sold 23 million phones in the quarter that Microsoft sold 4 million. And if you really want to get some perspective, think about? the roughly 123 million Android phones that were sold, compared to Microsoft?s 4 million.

Microsoft?s smartphone market share inched up from 1.5% to 2.4% in a year, which is going in the right direction, but given the overall market, that?s still not saying much.

Here?s the latest market share chart just released by Gartner.

Parature's Best Customer Service Advice Series: Part 3 ? Expert ...

Recently, Parature asked a group of customer service professionals from around the globe to offer their best customer service advice. From managers to CSRs, we received a fantastic variety of best advice.

In the final installment of our three-part series, we?ll share insights from three top customer service and customer experience thought leaders: Shep Hyken, Kate Nasser and Bill Quiseng:

Shep Hyken on Creating Wow Moments through Proactive Customer Service
?If opportunity doesn?t knock, build a door.? ~ Milton Berle

Here is an idea that will give you the opportunity to look like a star. You?ve heard of a Customer Service department. How about a Proactive Service department?

This idea is not really new. Companies and people have been doing this all along. It may not be an official department. As a matter of fact, it is common sense. Here are several examples of what I am referring to:

The waiter who fills a customer?s water glass before the customer has to ask.

The shipping department that follows up with a customer to insure the package arrived. If it didn?t arrive, they start the tracking process or reship the package.

The salesperson that sells a VCR to a customer and calls the customer the next day to make sure he/she was able to connect it to their television. If the customer couldn?t, the salesperson walks the customer through the process, step by step.

As mentioned above, the idea of proactive service is not new. But a formal process to provide this type of ?thinking ahead? is not usually the norm. It is usually an individual?s effort, within a company, that provides this level of service.

Proactive service is an opportunity to show how good you are. A customer decides to do business with you because they trust you enough to deliver ?the goods.? Proactive service reinforces the decision the customer made. It helps to build respect and loyalty. Why leave this powerful concept to chance. Make it a normal procedure as part of the sales and follow-up process and watch your customers say, ?Wow!?

Shep Hyken, CSP, CPAE is the Chief Amazement Officer of Shepard Presentations. He is a customer service expert, New York Times bestselling author and a Hall of Fame professional speaker. Kate Nasser on Valuing the Perspective of the Customer
Kate advises leaders to remember that customers judge every single interaction from their perspective. Be transparent and assess success from the outside in ? not the inside out. This builds trust and loyalty.

Says Kate in a recent blog post, ?Sales and customer service leaders create super customer experience possibilities when they pave the customer?s road with transparency. Poor communication, hidden built in charges, surprise required purchases at the end of the sales cycle risk the sale and damage trust and the brand.?

Bill Quiseng?s Top 10 Customer Service Mantras
1. Nobody raves about average.

2. If your business cannot pledge ?Satisfaction Guaranteed or Your Money Back,? something is broken. Fix it.

3. No customer walks into your business, gives you money and then says, ?Dissatisfy me, please.? Aim for 100% customer satisfaction.

4. Delivering good customer service is business common sense. Your job is to make it common practice.

5. You cannot even begin to satisfy customers until you remove all the potential dissatisfiers.

6. Great Service is Great Theater. Your customer service role today: Act it like you mean it even if you don?t feel like it.

7. To really ?wow? your customers, get rid of the fine print.

8. To connect with new customers don?t try to get inside their heads. Get inside their hearts. Create an emotional connection.

9. It?s not the one big WOW to one customer that wins the day. It is the one little WOW delivered consistently to every customer.

10. Thinking about customer service doesn?t make it happen; delivering it does. Customer service is not an attitude; it?s action.

GM takes cue from Apple to address in-vehicle tech glitches

AUSTIN (Reuters) - General Motors Co rolling out its own version of Apple Inc's Genius Bar to prevent frustration over its in-car technology from driving away potential customers.

Touch-screen and voice-activated entertainment and navigation systems play a pivotal role in attracting car shoppers, but so far companies, including GM, have struggled to make their systems intuitive and effective.

GM believes the real problem stems from the lack of training provided to new drivers. As a result, the No. 1 U.S. automaker is dispatching 25 tech-savvy specialists to its 4,400 U.S. dealerships to show how to teach customers about technology.

"You see a lot of people get into the vehicle, and they can't figure out the damned system," said Mark Harland, manager of GM's connected customer team.

"They get frustrated, and they get online and bash it, and that ends up on J.D. Power and Associates," he said, referring to the leading U.S. researcher into consumer satisfaction in the auto industry.

GM's specialists, who are mostly in their 20s, will communicate with GM engineers on software improvements. GM also has a dedicated team at its call center in Austin to answer questions about in-car technology.

GM is also requiring that its dealers have at least one staff member trained in all of GM's in-car systems - MyLink, CUE and IntelliLink - by the end of this year.

"Some customers don't utilize all the features on these new cars," Robert Ruiz, general manager of Capitol Chevrolet in Austin, said. "If we don't know to use them either, we can't teach them."

Earlier this year, a Booz & Company survey showed that 85 percent of auto executives predicted in-vehicle technology would see widespread adoption over the next five years. But many of the current systems have been poorly reviewed.

Last week, Consumer Reports magazine panned GM's new CUE system for its Cadillac lineup, calling it "convoluted and frustrating." The magazine also lambasted Ford Motor Co's Touch system.

Harland said GM should adopt strategies from consumer electronics companies like Apple or Best Buy Co Inc to help consumers manage and understand their vehicle's features. It's up to the car companies to offer ongoing support if they're going to be competitive, he said.

"It's not good enough to just give someone a set of keys and say, 'See you later'," Harland said. "We need to help people with the technology."

Budget battle weighs on shopping season

13 hrs.

The impasse in Congress over the ?fiscal cliff? could be the Grinch that steals Christmas if it isn?t resolved soon.

A record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites over the four-day Black Friday weekend, up 9 percent from last year, according to the National Retail Federation. They spent an average $423 this year, up 6 percent from last year, for a total of $59 billion.

?I think there's a long way to go,? said retail industry analyst Dana Telsey. ?This season is going to be a battle almost every single day as you keep getting through to those ten days before (December) 25th. I think we go into a lull period now before you get the big sales coming again.?

Even without the uncertainty over a $500 million wave of tax hikes and spending cuts set to hit paychecks Jan. 1, retailers face some major challenges this holiday season.

With unemployment stuck at nearly at 8 percent, millions of households are without paychecks. Still reeling from last month?s Superstorm Sandy, millions of hard-hit households have had to dip into savings to clean up and rebuild. (Based on insurance data from previous storms, as much as half of the estimated $50 billion in property losses may have been uninsured.) Spending on lost household furnishings and damaged homes will divert funds that would otherwise have gone to holiday shopping.

Spending may also fade this holiday season because, continuing a decade-long trend, retailers kicked it off ?even earlier this year. Some consumers have already spent all or part of the money they budgeted for the holidays.

With so much economic uncertainty this year ?retailers started extending their promotional period,? said American Express vice chairman Ed Gilligan. ?Our research says that some people have been holiday shopping since Halloween or even earlier.?

Consumers who haven?t finished ? or even started ? their holiday shopping face continued uncertainty until Congress and the White House reach a budget deal. One of the biggest single hits to spending would come from the expiration of jobless benefits which, unless renewed, would remove $26 billion from consumer spending next year, according to the non-partisan?Congressional Budget Office.

Since the recession hit in 2007, Congress has battled multiple times over the extension of four separate? tiers? of extended benefits. As a result, most beneficiaries are keenly aware of just how vulnerable they are to a last-minute cutoff of those extended tiers.?

All those people facing expiration are going to keep their wallets closed, even if a last-minute deal is reached before year-end.

On Monday, a White House report estimated that letting taxes rise on middle-class families would take a? $200 billion bite out of consumer spending in 2013. That 1.7 percentage point cut in spending would knock 1.4 percentage points off GDP growth, according to the White House's National Economic Council and Council of Economic Advisers.

The retail industry, which has accounted for nine percent of employment growth since the U.S. recession ended in June 2009, would be among the hardest hit, the report said.

The CBO has estimated that, unless modified or postponed, the budget law set to take effect in January will push the U.S. economy back into recession and send the unemployment rate to 9.1 percent ? up from the current 7.9 percent. The budget package would send the nation?s gross domestic product, which grew at a 2 percent annual rate in the third quarter, into reverse, shrinking at a 0.5 percent rate, according to the CBO analysis.

Much of the contraction would come from a sharp slowdown in consumer spending, according to Monday?s analysis by the White House of the impact on middle class consumers.

The report was the latest volley by President Barack Obama in his ongoing political battle to strike a deal with Republicans that would extend tax cuts for families making less than $250,000 a year and raise taxes on people making more.

Shortly after his re-election, Obama called on Congress to extend tax cuts for 98 percent of American families even before wider deal is reached. The White House also wants lawmakers to fix the alternative minimum tax, set up decades ago to remove tax breaks for high-income households. Because it was not indexed for inflation, is has to be fixed every year to avoid snaring in millions of less affluent taxpayers.

Middle class households ? along with all wage earners - will also lose about $68 a week in spending money if the two percent payroll tax holiday is allowed to expire.

Detroit mayor announces furloughs to avoid bankruptcy

Detroit City Council is balking at next step in a state plan to restore financial stability to the embattled city, delaying a $30 million infusion of state funds.

By Mark Guarino,?Staff writer / November 21, 2012

Detroit activists hold up protest signs to encourage Detroit City Council members to vote "no" on a contract to hire a law firm that was part of a deal to overhaul the city's finances, during a full council meeting on Nov. 20. The council rejected the measure, 8 to1.

In order to make up for a $30 million shortfall expected by year's end, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing announced on Wednesday that city employees will take unpaid furloughs and that he would implement ?other cost-savings actions? starting the first of January.

?We will ensure that revenue-generating departments are not impacted by these cost-cutting measures. Most importantly, I want our citizens to know that public safety will not be jeopardized,? he said in a statement.

The cutbacks are a response to the latest pushback from the Detroit City Council over demands by?state officials to bring long-needed financial stability to the city.

On Tuesday, the city council voted 8-1 against hiring Miller Canfield, an international law firm with offices in Detroit, tasked to shepherd the city though a fiscal reform plan established by the Michigan Department of Treasury last week. Failing to hire the firm puts the city out of compliance with the plan, which is designed to provide the city with access to $30 million in bonds held in escrow since March. The bond money was part of $137 million that the state has raised on the city?s behalf through a debt sale.

Had the city agreed to move forward with Miller Canfield, the state would have released $10 million to the city that same day, with an additional $20 million by mid-December. In a state released late Tuesday, Mayor Bing said the vote ?is one more example of how city council has stalled our efforts to bring financial stability to the city of Detroit.? He added that the only remaining cash infusion on the city?s horizon was property tax revenue due in January.

City council members rejected the $300,000 contract with Miller Canfield primarily because it presented a conflict of interest, as the firm was hired by the state to write the agreement that the city is now tasked to follow. Some members also criticized Bing for suggesting the city will go bankrupt by the end of the year and said that they deserved more time to seek other bids.

During Tuesday?s meeting, council member Kwame Kenyatta described the contract as ?a violation of morals,? according to the Detroit News Wednesday. ?I don?t see how any member at this table in good conscience on behalf of the people of the city can vote for this,? Mr. Kenyatta said.

Council President Charles Pugh also blasted the mayor, telling WXYZ-TV, the local ABC television affiliate, ?that the law firm ?was shoved down our throat, and we felt like we were being forced into accepting one particular law firm."
