Pinky DNA Points To Clues About Ancient Humans

A replica of the pinky bone fragment found in a Siberian cave. Researchers used the bone bit to extract and sequence the genome of a girl who lived tens of thousands of years ago. Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology

A replica of the pinky bone fragment found in a Siberian cave. Researchers used the bone bit to extract and sequence the genome of a girl who lived tens of thousands of years ago.

Scientists in Germany have been able to get enough DNA from a fossilized pinky to produce a high-quality DNA sequence of the pinky's owner.

"It's a really amazing-quality genome," says David Reich of Harvard Medical School in Boston. "It's as good as modern human genome sequences, from a lot of ways of measuring it."

The pinky belonged to a girl who lived tens of thousands of years ago. Scientists aren't sure about the exact age. She is a member of an extinct group of humans called Denisovans. The name comes from Denisova cave in Siberia, where the pinky was found.

Two years ago, scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig reported that they had been able to get just enough DNA from the fossil to make a rough sequence of her DNA. But Matthias Meyer developed a far more efficient way of recovering ancient DNA, so he went back to the tiny amount of DNA left over from the first effort, and reanalyzed it.

"And from this little leftover, we were able to determine the sequence of the Denisova genome 30-fold over," says Meyer.

What that means is they were able to look at every single location along all of this girl's chromosomes 30 times to be absolutely certain that they had the right DNA letter in the right spot. The new results appear in the online edition of the journal Science.

The high-quality sequence gives scientists valuable new data for studying ancient humans. Researchers have begun, for example, to explore which modern human populations may have inherited genes from Denisovans.

"We still cannot detect a trace of any Denisovan genetic material at all in mainland Eurasia" ? places such as China and Japan, says Harvard's Reich. "It's only in Southeast Asia and Australia that we detect it."

Understanding the flow of genes will tell scientists about where and when ancient humans moved around the planet.

Reich says for the moment, nearly all scientists know about the Denisovans comes from a girl's pinky. "One of the amazing things about the Denisovans is we still don't know what kinds of artifacts they left behind, what kinds of archaeology. We really only know them from their DNA," he says. "So it's really a genome in search of an archaeology."

Svante P??bo, senior author on the new research paper, says it will now be possible to comb through the Denisovan genome to see how it differs from that of modern humans.

"This is perhaps, in the long term, to me, the most fascinating thing about this ? what it will tell us in the future about what makes [modern humans] special in the world relative to Denisovans and Neanderthals," says P??bo.

Now that they've completed a high-quality genome sequence of their Denisovan, the German scientists have begun work on improving the sequence of another extinct group of humans: the Neanderthals. They expect that work to be published in a year or so.

biomass larina: Facial cosmetic surgeon | Health & Fitness | Does a ...

You no doubt realize what cosmetic surgery can do for people. In fact, many famous stars have gone through plastic surgery. You must know that as you become a patient, things will be different. The cosmetic surgery advice presented below can help you get more familiar with the process and start thinking about the important choices you need to make.

Check into what is involved if you are disappointed with the results of your plastic surgery. Although serious complications are unlikely, you should be prepared for all possible outcomes. While you will usually not receive a refund, find out if your surgeon offers corrective surgery at a discount if you are not pleased with your results.

Before surgery begins, research four main things. The number one thing that you need to know about is your recovery. The second thing is price and payment options. Next discuss any complication that could arise post-op such as infection or inflammation. Finally, ask your surgeon about any other risks associated with the procedure.

Always ask for the facility's permits and credentials before electing that your surgery be performed there. Never go to a hospital or clinic without first checking its credentials. Things to investigate include the history of both problems and successes.

Ask to see the credentials of your doctor before even speaking about your procedure. Talk to your surgeon about where they went to college, when they graduated, and the number of the specific procedures they have done. Additionally, talk to him about pictures of previous patients.

Take a visit to the place you are having the procedure. Whether it is in the doctor's office or another building, you want to know the facility has the proper certification. You should familiarize yourself with the clinic or hospital where the procedure is going to occur in order to make yourself more comfortable when you are undergoing the surgery.

Make sure to ask to see photos of patients prior to their surgery and what their outcome was. Remember that there's no way that your surgeon could guarantee you have similar results as previous patients. Find out if the surgeon has a computer program that can show you what you may look like after surgery.

When looking for a plastic surgeon to perform your procedure, be sure to look for one that specializes in what you want done. There may be a number of good surgeons in your area, but they may not be adequately experienced in what you want done. Use the Internet as a tool to research this information.

Talk to your potential surgeon and ask them about past procedures. Look at before and after photographs to gain a better understanding of what to expect. You can never be sure that you will have the results you want, but if you know your stuff and pick the right surgeon it will be more likely.

Learn all that you can about the surgery you are considering. Before you talk with a surgeon, you should fully understand the procedure. With the proper information, you will know the right questions to ask and be educated to any inconsistencies between what you know and what the surgeon tells you.

Before you have a cosmetic surgery, thoroughly check out your prospective surgeon. See that they have current certifications and licenses, as specified by local laws and that all claims made by them are accurate. Despite having reasonable expectations and optimism, it's best to cover all bases beforehand.

If you find yourself in a rough situation, such as a divorce or a mid-life crisis, do not schedule surgery right now. When you have emotional stress factors to worry about, it can be extremely difficult to get through surgery and the recovery process in a healthy, timely manner. Additionally, if you recover slowly you might be negatively affected emotionally.

Once you make the decision to have a cosmetic surgery procedure, there is a great deal of research for you to do and many things for you to learn. Ensure you do not forget about the cost of the operation. Find out the cost of the procedure after you choose one. Remember to think about after-care and follow-up visits.

Some cosmetic surgery is not a matter of choice. Make sure that you have all of the information necessary, even if your surgery is for an automobile accident or medical condition. There are many treatment options available when it comes to cosmetic surgery; therefore, investigate each option thoroughly.

When you talk with a plastic surgeon, what should you ask him? Prior to surgery, you must know a great deal about the surgeon and the procedure. You need to make sure they are board certified, most importantly. Look at before and after photos of other patients to see the results that the surgeon can provide. Talk to your doctor. Ask every question you can think of about your surgery.

The preparation for surgery can start as early as a month before the actual procedure. Any pain medication should be considered carefully. If you can avoid using them, you should; completely. Many pain killers will thin your blood and extend healing time.

Look into all of the financing options at your disposal. Doctor's know that cosmetic procedures are not generally covered by insurance and most will work with you to set up a payment plan to cover the cost of your surgery. If your doctor is not willing to take payments you might have to find one that is.

Make plans for your care after the procedure is completed. Be sure to plan out your recovery if you are going to have any sort of major procedure done such as liposuction or rhinoplasty. These surgeries are a big deal and you ought to treat them that way. Take some extra time off of work and make sure to have someone help you during your recovery period.

Once it is your turn to be the patient, however, things are different. There are a few things you have probably never even thought about. Use the information from this article to make sure you go into your cosmetic surgery completely informed and prepared.

Samsung ATIV S Revealed: Windows Phone 8, 4.8? HD Display, 1.5GHz Dual-Core Processor

ativ1bSorry Nokia, consider your thunder stolen. It hasn't yet made an appearance at Samsung's big IFA press conference inside the Berlin Tempodrom, but Samsung's first Windows Phone 8 device has just been made official thanks to a post on Microsoft's Windows Phone Blog. That device in question is the ATIV (EYY-tiv? Ah-TEEV?) S, a rather handsome new handset that sports a (sadly unspecified) 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing counterpart to boot. The spec sheet may not be the most riveting you'll ever see -- Windows Phone has never really required bleeding edge hardware -- but the move puts the pressure on Nokia to unveil something tremendous next week.

Military Muppet: TV character urges Israelis to prepare for strike on ...

A photo shows the cover of a new, emergency pamphlet being distributed nationwide by Israeli Army's Home Front Command August 27, 2012 (Reuters/Israeli Defence Force)

A new emergency pamphlet in Israel instructs residents to prepare for the worst if Tel Aviv conducts a military strike on Iran. But the face on the brochure isn?t the country?s President or Prime Minister ? it?s a Muppet.

The cover of the 15-page leaflet pictures a smiling Moishe Oofnik, the Israeli Muppet version of Oscar the Grouch. He?s the resident pessimist on Rechov Sumsum, Israel?s co-production of the long-running American children?s program ?Sesame Street.?

Muppets on the popular show are known for teaching children numbers and the alphabet, but Moishe Oofnik has taken on a different job with this pamphlet ? instructing Israelis how to react if their nation?s government launches a war against Iran.

The booklet, issued by the Israeli military, says that once air raid sirens sound, residents of the Jewish state would have between 30 seconds and three minutes to find cover before rockets hit their area. The brochure, which is being distributed across the country, also teaches Israelis how to prepare a safe room or shelter for emergency situations.

The furry Muppet puts a happy face on the warnings, though the issue is anything but lighthearted: Israeli ministers have estimated that up to 500 civilians could die in the conflict that would follow a strike on Iran.

The pamphlet comes in the wake of recent remarks by Israeli officials suggesting that Tel Aviv may soon launch a unilateral attack on Tehran?s nuclear program. Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak reportedly favor a strike on Iran. Public statements and anonymous quotes to Israeli media in the past week have raised speculation that Israel may soon attack Iran.

The bellicose rhetoric comes over Israeli and Western allegations that Iran?s nuclear program is a cover for the development of atomic weapons, while Tehran claims the facilities are for civilian purposes.

Less than two weeks ago, Netanyahu announced that negotiations with Iran had ?failed,? and claimed that Israel will attack Iran in the near future, with or without US consent.

The Israeli Defense Minister also supports military action against Iran: "Barak is advocating for action and the defense establishment is investing billions to prepare for an Israeli military operation," an Israeli official told Ynet News.

But the ambition to set back Iran?s nuclear program could come at a high cost to Israel?s citizens, causing many Israelis to protest a potential attack. The country?s president also recently spoke out against a unilateral strike against Iran.

"It's clear to us that we can't do it alone. We can only delay [Iran's progress]. Thus it's clear to us that we need to go together with America," Shimon Peres told Israel?s Channel Two television.

Iran has promised to retaliate against in Israeli attack in what could lead to a wider regional war among several different forces. Tel Aviv fears that Tehran could induce its Hezbollah guerrilla allies in Lebanon and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip to launch rocket strikes against Israel if Iran were attacked.

As the Israeli government prepares for the worst, it is urging residents to have a ?family talk? about preparing for a national emergency. But it?s not just pamphlets that indicate that an attack may be imminent ? Israel increased the distribution of gas masks and other protective gear to the public several weeks ago.

"There are always innovations the public needs to know about, it doesn't mean anything is going to happen today, tomorrow or the next day," an Israeli military source told Reuters.

PFT: Saints adjust schedule due to Tropical Storm Isaac

Carolina Panthers v New York JetsGetty Images

Jets fans were booing.

And they had every right. After paying full fare for tickets, and parking, and (hopefully) beer, they were forced to watch the Jets offense.

But at least the Jets are consistent.

Even after getting a turnover and a short field (taking over at the Panthers 12-yard line), the Jets starting offense continued to pitch a shutout in the preseason, failing to get into the end zone.

If you?re scoring at home (and they?re not, or on the road either), that?s 15 possessions for the starters in the preseason, and no touchdowns. The backups haven?t scored either, leaving no hope that personnel changes are going to fix things.

While it?s easy to rail on quarterback Mark Sanchez, it?s misguided as well, as he suffered through several dropped passes.?They actually looked competent early in the game running no-huddle, but that didn?t last long.

But Sanchez was unnecessarily glib on the sidelines, joking with Michelle Tafoya that they were saving all their touchdowns for the regular season.

For it to have been funny, there would have to be an expectation this wasn?t actually what they are.

The good news is the Jets defense was strong.

It better be.

Here are some other things we learned on Sunday Night Football.

1. There were cheers when Tim Tebow took the field.

I?m not sure anymore if they were sarcastic or sincere.

Of course, when he got a few plays under his belt, they were booing him too. Those were sincere.

The Jets night in a nutshell was when he jumped up to celebrate a surprising first-down scramble, and a few plays later, threw an ugly pick.

End well, this will not.

2. Cam Newton can make plays even without a gaudy stat line.

He was a positively Tebowian 6-of-15 passing for 60 yards and a touchdown, and ran twice for 16 yards.

But he makes the Panthers offense move.

They don?t want him to run as much on purpose this year, but the threat of him making a decision on a zone read is enough to freeze opponents for a second and buy time for him to do something else with it.

3. There should have been more cheers for Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, playing his first preseason game since his surgery to repair his third torn ACL.

Davis has incredible gifts, or had them before his knee was shredded. He can still run well, and the Panthers are going to spot him in rather than try to ask him to play every snap.

As a blitzer and a guy who can drop back and cover tight ends, he?s still good.

But they?ll probably never stop holding their breath every time he hits the ground.

4. The Jets offense has problems, but they are not without players on that side.?Problem is, they?re all getting hurt.

Tight end Dustin Keller left the game early with a hamstring problem, and then backup Josh Baker was take off with a right knee injury.

Whether it?s Sanchez or Tebow, the Jets need safe passes. And without a solid tight end out there (or even his backup), they have issues.

They should sign Jeremy Shockey, for comic relief if nothing else.

5. Not a banner night for the Panthers highly paid stable of running backs.

DeAngelo Williams fumbled twice, Jonathan Stewart was hauled off on a cart with an ankle injury, and Mike Tolbert was on the bench with a bag of ice on his knee.

Armond Smith and Josh Vaughan are up for contract extensions next.

6. The Jets got consistent pressure up front from their starting defense.

Quinton Coples and Muhammad Wilkerson in particular got a good push on a Panthers line that?s at least above average and may be very good.

They?re going to be asked to carry a team, and they may be able to.

7. The Panthers have apparently elected to go with slow and steady over athletic ability at free safety.

Former Ravens backup Haruki Nakamura (who was stuck behind some guy named Ed Reed) got the start and took all the work with the first offense.

Former second-round pick Sherrod Martin, who unlike Nakamura has range, is now a bench warmer.

This was initially a competition, but it appears the Panthers have made their decision. Martin?s such a better athlete it?s comical, but he had a series of gaffes in coverage last year that even had the owner cracking on him.

Basically, they?re electing to go with a limitation they can plan on rather than guessing where the more talented Martin will be.

8. The Panthers offense wasn?t very good either. But unlike the Jets, they had a reason.

Without wide receiver Steve Smith, the Panthers offense is completely different. He?s the vertical threat that makes everything else work.

The good news is, he?s going to be OK after dealing with an infection in his foot.

Togo women push sex strike to unseat president

LOME, Togo (AP) ? The female wing of a civil rights group is urging women in Togo to stage a week-long sex strike to demand the resignation of the country's president.

Women are being asked to start withholding sex from their husbands or partners as of Monday, said Isabelle Ameganvi, leader of the women's wing of the group Let's Save Togo. She said the strike will put pressure on Togo's men to take action against President Faure Gnassingbe.

Ameganvi, a lawyer, told The Associated Press that her group is following the example of Liberia's women, who used a sex strike in 2003 to campaign for peace. "We have many means to oblige men to understand what women want in Togo," Ameganvi said.

The sex strike was announced at a rally Saturday of several thousand in the capital city, Lome. The demonstration was organized by a coalition that is protesting recent electoral reforms which they say will make it easier for Gnassingbe to win reelection in the polls set for October.

Gnassingbe came to power in 2005, following the death of his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, who ruled the West African country for 38 years. Gnassingbe has not commented on the sex strike, nor has his wife. Earlier this month, two anti-Gnassingbe protests were dispersed by police using tear gas and more than 100 people were arrested.

At Saturday's rally, which ended peacefully, Jean-Pierre Fabre, leader of the National Alliance for Change opposition party, called for Gnassingbe's resignation. Other opposition leaders called for civil disobedience.

But it is the sex strike that has people talking in this small country of 7 million people.

"It's a good thing for us women to observe this sex strike as long as our children are in jail now. I believe that by observing this, we will get them released," Abla Tamekloe said. "For me, it's like fasting, and unless you fast, you will not get what you want from God."

When asked if her husband would agree, Tamekloe said: "It is easy for me to observe it. I am used to it, but I am not sure my husband will accept, but I have to explain to him."

Another Togolese woman said she supports the sex strike, but she does not know if she can carry it out for a full week.

"I do agree that we women have to observe this sex strike but I know my husband will not let me complete it. He may agree at first, but as far as I know him, he will change overnight," Judith Agbetoglo said. "So I don't believe I can do the one-week sex strike. Otherwise, I will have serious issues with him. He likes that too much."

Though the call for a sex strike seemed to please many women, some men, including heads of opposition parties and human rights groups in the anti-Gnassingbe coalition, did not believe it would be a success.

"One week sex strike is too much," said Fabre of the National Alliance for Change, who suggested a shorter period, amid laughter from the crowd at the demonstration. "Let's go for only two days".

Others were skeptical of Isabelle Ameganvi's call.

"It is easy for her to say because she is not married herself. She does not live with a man at home," said Ekoue Blame, a Togolese journalist. "Does she think women who live with their husband will be able to observe that? By the way, who controls what couples do behind closed doors?"

The Big Decision For Home Sellers Who Fail To Sell In This Market ...

If you have recently left the real estate market with a home that failed to sell, it is time for you to make a tough decision.

The wave of foreclosures that has been forming in the sea of distressed properties in Tallahassee will be hitting the market soon, and the competition will be far too fierce for people who are trying to pull equity from their homes. The race is on to beat them to the market.

The one thought you do not need to have is whether or not to wait until next year. A home that failed to sell this year will very likely fetch far less money next year than it would have brought in today?s real estate market, as banks dump inventory with liquidation pricing.

No, the real decision is whether to immediately sell a home that failed to sell previously, or to decide to put the sale off for five or more years.

Marketing A Home That Failed To Sell

A Home That Did Not Sell Is ExpiredMarketing a home that failed to sell during a recent effort in the Tallahassee MLS requires more effort than marketing a home that is new to the market. Why?

Because the home has been rejected by the real estate agents in the market.

You might be wondering ?Why is my home not selling,? but real estate professionals have already moved on to the thousands of others homes available. The key to marketing a home that failed to sell is to make it ?new? all over again.

This takes a lot of daily work to put the property in front of people who are ready to make a buying decision.

Selling A Home That Failed To Sell

So the race is on. Foreclosures are going to be rolling into the market heavily for several years. Banks must liquidate, thus they will be lowering prices to sell-out the inventory.

These offerings for buyers are in direct competition with anybody putting a home on the market, so the best thing to do is make a choice. Sell your home fast, or plan on waiting out the market for five or more years.

If you own a home that failed to sell during a recent marketing attempt, just drop me a note and we can schedule a time to help you review your specific situation and help you evaluate your options.

Drop in high school test results causes UK angst

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's top teachers are unhappy with their students' grades, but it's the government they're blaming.

Results for British high school test exams have fallen for the first time in 24 years, prompting some educators to accuse the government of arbitrarily toughening standards in a bid to curb grade inflation.

The fall in tests for science, English, and other subjects has also has drawn angst from children and parents, who have voiced fears that students have been penalized to make a political statement.

Education Secretary Michael Gove has denied leaning on evaluators to give high school students a tough time, but some principals are demanding that tests be re-graded.

One teachers' association has threatened to sue over the issue, and Britain's education regulator has promised an investigation.

Patio Door Lock Replacement Tips ? boche.net ? VMware vEvangelist

August 25th, 2012 by jason Leave a reply ?

1.? Make sure you purchase the correct replacement lock at your home improvement store.? This one looks like a match.

Snagit Capture

?

2.? Before removing the old lock or installing the new lock, insert the long door handle screw in the door.? Now it is safe to remove the two mounting screws located on the face of the lock.

Snagit Capture

?

3.? Failure to perform step #2 above allows gravity to cause the lock to fall down inside to the bottom of the door.? Not such a big deal if it?s the old lock being replaced, such as in my case, but you don?t want to drop your new replacement lock down there.? As far as I know, there is no easy way to retrieve it without removing the door.? Notice my new lock stays in place while I go grab the two mounting screws.

Snagit Capture

?

Well that?s it.? I hope I was able to save you that 2nd trip to the home improvement store.

Gonzalez has a blast in blue

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:36 a.m. ET Aug. 26, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) - It took two pitches for Adrian Gonzalez to make a major difference with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Gonzalez hit a three-run homer a couple of hours after arriving at his new address, giving Clayton Kershaw all the offensive support he needed in 8-2 victory over Josh Johnson and the Miami Marlins on Saturday night.

"It means a lot to have Adrian here because it gives us a lot more confidence," Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp said. "I mean, this is a guy that can drive in 100-plus runs every year and is a possible 40-home run guy. He really knows the National League well and he's had a lot of success here, so he's definitely going to help us tremendously."

Los Angeles acquired Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto earlier in the day in a blockbuster trade with Boston. During a postgame press conference at home plate with Beckett and Punto, Gonzalez wore a Mickey Mouse T-shirt - even though he was 35 miles from Disneyland.

"When I heard about the trade, I had to pack really fast," he said. "I saw this T-shirt and it was like, `There couldn't be a better shirt to wear today."'

Gonzalez, a four-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove first baseman, batted cleanup between Kemp and Hanley Ramirez, with Andre Ethier dropped to sixth despite his four hits and four RBIs in Friday night's 11-4 win over the Marlins.

Ethier had his second straight four-hit game Saturday. He gave the Dodgers a 7-2 lead in the fifth with a leadoff homer against reliever Wade LeBlanc and added a bloop single to center in the seventh for his 10th consecutive hit, tying a club record set in 1919 by first baseman Ed Konetchy.

"He's starting to find his swing again and he looks good up there," Kershaw said. "When you have a guy like him hitting sixth, you know it's a good lineup. I'm sure Andre is fine with it. And if he keeps getting some fastballs to hit, he's going to be really OK with it because there's going to be a lot of RBI chances out there for him."

Kershaw (12-7) pitched three-hit ball over eight innings for the new-look Dodgers, who also got a home run from Mark Ellis. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner struck out eight, walked two and yielded one hit in his final six innings while lowering his overall ERA to 2.84.

"I was just trying to pound the strike zone and make their guys swing the bats so that I could get us back in the dugout and get us back out there hitting," said Kershaw, who is 5-1 with a 1.94 ERA in his last six starts. "That's the benefit of having a lead like that. You can just go out there and be aggressive."

Johnson (7-11) threw 89 pitches in three innings, giving up six runs and 10 hits while retiring only nine of the 20 batters he faced in his shortest outing this season. The two-time All-Star has lost four straight starts for the first time in his career.

"I was terrible. That's pretty much it," Johnson said. "Physically, this was the best I've felt in probably four or five starts. But I faced their whole lineup in the first inning, and that's not a good sign. I don't want to pitch like that."

Johnson used up 45 pitches during the Dodgers' four-run first, which began with doubles by Ellis and Luis Cruz. Kemp singled Cruz to third and Gonzalez sent a towering drive deep into the lower seats in the right-field corner on an 0-1 pitch.

"It was definitely exciting to see him hit that ball. It definitely gave us some motivation and pumped us up," Kemp said. "We were swinging the bats well in the first inning and Johnson dug himself a little hole. He made a couple of mistakes and some of us made him pay for it with some good, timely hitting."

Ellis homered to left-center on the right-hander's second pitch of the second inning, and A.J. Ellis increased the lead to 6-2 with an RBI single in the third.

Gorkys Hernandez doubled in the top of the first and scored on Jose Reyes' groundout. Giancarlo Stanton led off the Marlins' second with his 28th homer and seventh in 10 games, a drive deep into the left-field pavilion estimated at 452 feet.

NOTES: Beckett is slated to make his Dodgers debut Tuesday night at Colorado. ... Dodgers RHP Chad Billingsley, who came out of Friday's series opener after 3 1-3 innings and 58 pitches because of inflammation in his elbow, was placed on the 15-day disabled list. He is 6-0 with a 1.80 ERA over his last seven starts. ... Punto made his Dodgers debut in the eighth as a pinch-hitter for Kershaw. He drew a walk and scored on a single by Cruz. ... Gonzalez became the sixth player to homer in his first at-bat with the Dodgers since they moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles after the 1957 season, and the first to do it since Juan Rivera on July 15, 2011. ... Rivera started in LF in place of Shane Victorino, scratched because of back tightness. Rivera had been platooning at 1B with James Loney, who was dealt to the Red Sox. ... Gonzalez, born in San Diego, played in 45 games at Dodger Stadium during his five seasons with the Padres and batted .212 with five homers and 21 RBIs in 165 at-bats. The Marlins made him the first overall pick in the 2000 draft, but traded him six days later to Texas for reliever Ugueth Urbina. ... Johnson has allowed a homer in four consecutive starts, tying a career worst. He also did it late in the 2006 season. ... Dodgers pitchers have allowed first-inning runs in each of the first five games on this homestand.

Panama, California advance at Little League WS

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) ? Hance Smith's eyes widened in the dugout as he watched Quinton Gago send a homer well over the left-field fence.

The boys from Petaluma, Calif., are packing quite the punch from the plate at the Little League World Series.

Smith hit two homers, including a first-inning grand slam, and California pounded out 12 hits in an 11-1, five-inning victory over San Antonio on Thursday night to reach the U.S championship game.

California will play Goodlettsville, Tenn., on Saturday.

Smith, 13, is trying to remember to keep his hands out in front of his body before every at-bat.

"With that thought in mind, I keep going to the plate," the power-hitting shortstop said. "It's been working out so far."

Smith finished 3 for 3 with five RBIs, and Gago had two hits and two RBIs.

Starter Danny Marzo, already a California hero for hitting a game-ending homer this week, came up big on the mound with 11 strikeouts in five innings.

He was gracious on the mound, too, after Texas' Jordan Cardenas went deep in the third. The 12-year-old Marzo greeted Cardenas with a high-five with his glove hand as Cardenas jogged down the third-base line.

Earlier, Aguadulce, Panama, edged Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, 2-1 to advance to the international final against Japan.

California didn't have quite as difficult a time against Texas, the game ending in the bottom of the fifth due to Little League's 10-run rule.

"Runs early help," said California manager Eric Smith, Hance's proud father. "It gives confidence to our pitcher and just makes everything a little easier."

The Petaluma boys managed just two hits off Texas pitching in the decisive six-run first ? but both balls landed over the outfield fence.

California loaded the bases on three walks. A wild pitch brought home the first run, and the bases were loaded again after Austin Paretti reached first on a dropped third strike.

Smith then hit a 2-2 pitch that just cleared the wall in left-center 225 feet away.

"Petaluma! Petaluma!" shouted California's fans.

Two pitches later, Quinton Gago went deep, too, and left no doubt about his shot. It easily cleared the wall in left and landed amongst fans perched on the grassy hill beyond the outfield.

It was such an impressive shot that even Smith stopped to admire the blast from the dugout as the ball carried under the night sky.

But Smith wasn't done himself.

Another homer to left in the third earned the 13-year-old slugger another set of pats on the helmet from happy teammates who greeted him at the plate.

And to think, Smith has been borrowing teammate Andrew White's bat.

He may not ever give it back the way he's hitting.

Marzo allowed just two hits and a walk, and retired the last seven batters he faced.

California has a chance to avenge its only loss in South Williamsport ? a 9-6 defeat to the Tennessee crew from Goodlettsville on Sunday. Texas was eliminated.

Texas manager Jack Wideman Jr. gathered his players in a circle in left field after the game for one final team meeting as the players' families and friends waited in the stands.

"We ran up against a great team ... One through 12, every one of them can put the ball in play," Wideman said. They were just smashing the ball."

In the early game, 12-year-old Edisson Gonzalez had 11 strikeouts and James Gonzalez provided the offense with a two-run homer in the first to lift Panama.

Another rematch in on top in the international final. Tokyo beat Panama 4-1 on Wednesday night.

Mexico starter Ramon Ballina struck out 12, but allowed James Gonzalez's big blast.

Panama manager Luis Gonzalez is also a proud uncle after his 12-year-old nephew hit the homer.

"It was a difficult game, but our pitcher did his job," Luis Gonzalez said through a translator. "One pitch decided the game."

Mexico scored in the fifth on Marcelo Perez's RBI single, and had the tying run at second with two outs in the sixth.

But Edisson Gonzalez got a strikeout to end the game.

"I was not nervous in the beginning of the game," he said, "but in the last inning when the first batter got on, I got nervous. (James') home run helped because I'm not having a good tournament at the plate and we needed it to win the game."

After the teams exchanged handshakes at the plate, Edisson Gonzalez joined several teammates to exchange high-fives one more time with Mexico's disappointed players. He tapped counterpart Ballina, 13, on the shoulder, as the Mexico starter walked back to his dugout to offer kind words and an embrace.

Looking as cool and confident as a big-league ace, Edisson Gonzalez consistently worked ahead of the count and didn't allow a runner to get past first until Eduardo Abrego doubled to left in the fifth.

"Yes we can! Yes we can," Mexico's vocal fans yelled in Spanish in trying to urge a comeback.

Perez followed with his solid RBI single to center, but Gonzalez got two strikeouts to end that inning.

Renowned earlier in the tournament for their power, Mexico hitters struggled at the plate until the final innings. The loss eliminated Mexico.

After beating Curacao on Tuesday, Mexico lost its second game without manager Fernando Rios, who was suspended two games after failing to have all his players take a turn at bat in a 4-3 win earlier this week over Taiwan.

Mexico's acting manager elected not to speak with reporters after the game.

News: Google-Apple "Patent" War Heats Up (Again)

Search giant seeks to have Apple's entire US lineup hit with a banstick

Ever since Apple recognized that Google's Android mobile OS was a threat to the dominance of the iPhone, it has sought to use the courts to stymie competition. With bans in various countries of the Galaxy Tab and Samsung Galaxy as well as many HTC and Apple devices this litigiousness has reached fairly epic proportions for the consumer. We're now seeing what is probably Google's largest ever legal salvo fired at Apple in response.

This salvo is a direct result of Google's having acquired Motorola's cellphone division in May of this year. This was a move designed largely to bolster its arsenal of patents with which to fight Apple and protect partners that use its Android mobile OS such as HTC, Samsung and LG. Fresh from announcing the culling of a fifth of Motorola's employees and a third of its locations, Google submitted a 50 page document? to the International Trade Commission (ITC) which seeks bans on Apple importing to the US, its entire current lines of computers, notebooks, iPads and iPhones:

"[Google] seeks a permanent exclusion specifically related to [Apple] excluding from entry into the United States certain wireless communications devices, portable music and data processing devices, computers, and components thereof" -?Submission Excerpt

While this document is entirely serious in tone, it is essentially a case of Google following a strategy of?'the best defense is offense" in legal terms. It's unlikely that the submission will result in Apple stores with completely empty shelves, rather Atomic would expect to see any successes in court used as leverage to bring Apple to the negotiating table internationally.

Many such submissions have been thrown out in the UK (with Apple being forced to print a 'Samsung didn't copy the iPad' apology in several British newspapers). However Apple won a significant victory a few days ago in Europe with the 7.7" Galaxy Tab being banned in the EU via German courts and similar attempts are ongoing in Australia. At present Apple also hold something of an advantage in America with several rulings in their favour and a $US2.7bn damages case against Samsung in deliberation; this is something Google clearly hopes to change.

Atomic will keep you informed of developments as both companies hand-slap each other all over the international courts; we simply don't expect sanity from either party anytime soon.
