GFD: Where are you from ? Tell us about your expat experience in Switzerland.

I was born and grew up in South Africa. I went to school and university in Johannesburg. I then worked in the retail industry in Business Intelligence. My husband and I moved to Lausanne in July 2011 when my son Travis was only 17 months old and I was also 32 weeks pregnant with my daughter Chelsea. Arriving here heavily pregnant and not speaking any French, was a challenge to say the least! But, I am very fortunate to have the most fantastic group of friends that I have met over the last year and a half and it has made the experience one I will never forget and hope never ends!

GFD: What brought you to Switzerland ?

My husband?s company transferred us here after spending time in their Johannesburg and Dubai offices.

GFD: Tell us about Kids Party Cupcakes

Kids Party Cupcakes?is exactly what the name says: customised cupcakes for kids parties. I do standard and mini size cupcakes, delivered to the party venue (in Lausanne) or to your home if you wish to send them to school with your child. All orders come in a disposable cardboard box that keeps the cupcakes protected and standing up and fresh too.

I also do Christenings, Baby Showers, Halloween Parties, Christmas Parties and a few mom?s teas too, but most of my orders are kids parties.

GFD: How did you start out ?

Kids Party Cupcakes?started out with me baking for my 2 kids parties, and then friends asking me to bake for their kids parties too. Before I knew it I was being ?booked? in advance to bake for parties. A friend of mine then called me and convinced me I had to start this business and make it official ? which I did! I really want to keep to cupcakes, but a few friends have managed to convince me to do their kids birthday cakes too, so on special request I will do those too.

GFD: What advice would you give to other expat mumpreneurs out there ?

I would say, ?You have nothing to lose. Try anything you feel there is a need for or you are interested in ? because there is always a chance it will work?

I started off trying to start 2 other ?businesses? ? did lots of planning and brainstorming and they both kind of fizzled out, but as you go you meet people along the way- and this leads to other things.

GFD: Which school did you choose for your children ? How have they settled in?

My son Travis started at Club Alpha recently. It?s still early days but so far we are very happy with the school and he has settled in very quickly. We decided that as we will be moving every few years as expats, we would like to keep our child in one school in Switzerland and although we looked at a few other schools, Club Alpha would take him at an earlier age than others. Also, we wanted him to be in a French-medium school so that he became bilingual at an early age and had the benefit of speaking an international language which neither my husband or I do!
