Last month?s Mobile World Congress saw the release of the first handsets featuring Windows Phone ?Tango?, a new version of the operating system optimised for low-end handsets with modest spec sheets. Last week, we reported on some of the OS limitations that Tango would present on those devices (specifically,?handsets with 256MB of RAM), and in the same article, we also covered?some of the new features that Microsoft plans to bring to existing mid-range and higher-end phones, currently running Windows Phone 7.5 (also known by its development codename ?Mango?).
Until now, references to Tango have, perhaps a little clumsily, encompassed both the new OS variant optimised for entry-level devices, and the planned update for Mango handsets.
Today, Stefania Duico, a Windows Phone executive with Microsoft Italy,?spoke with windowsphoneitaly.com, and revealed that the official name of the next OS release will be ?Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh?. But it?s currently unclear if this name refers exclusively to the update for existing handsets, or if it will also apply to the OS version for handsets with under 256MB of RAM.
What do you think of the new name? Do you think it makes more for the ?Refresh? nomenclature to apply solely to the update, or is it appropriate for Microsoft to also use the same branding for the feature-limited OS variant for low-end devices? Let us know your thoughts below.
