Green Blog: Outlook for Offshore Wind: Dark and Stormy
A worldwide survey of offshore wind installations takes a look at why it might be slow going in the United States, which still doesn?t have any.
Navigant Consulting, reviewing conditions at the end of last year, found that building a wind machine offshore in Europe cost about 4 million euros (around $5.1 million) per megawatt of capacity. By comparison, wind turbines built onshore in the United States (the only point of comparison for now) cost about $2 million per megawatt.
Building offshore is not all downside; for one thing, there is more wind, so identical machines onshore and at sea will produce wildly different amounts of electricity. And winds offshore tend to blow around the clock, delivering some energy during daylight, when electricity sells for a higher price in the wholesale markets. On land, the wind blows mostly at night, producing electricity at an hour when the market for electricity is depressed.
The Navigant study found that costs in Europe were increasing and are now 50 to 100 percent higher than they were when the first large-scale projects were built.
?The main reason is they are moving further offshore into deeper waters,? said Bruce Hamilton, a wind expert with Navigant. ?The easy sites are getting used up.?? But the wind is better farther offshore, he said, so the electricity may not cost more over all even if the machine does.

Still, the numbers indicate that such electricity would not be competitive in America. According to Navigant, operation and maintenance ? separate from the cost of building the machines ? costs about 39 euros, or about $50, per megawatt-hour. That is almost as high as the average wholesale price of a megawatt-hour in New York State ? $59 last year.
Wind installations in the United States benefit from a production tax credit and other tax breaks, but ?it?s just not competitive,? Mr. Hamilton said. ?People won?t do it unless they?re forced to.??
But costs could come down, he said.
Navigant said two projects could go into service off the East Coast in 2014: Cape Wind, near Cape Cod, Mass., and Fishermen?s Energy, off the New Jersey coast. Each benefits from a law passed by a state legislature.
The firm is tracking three other proposals along the East Coast, three off the Texas coast and one on the Ohio shore of Lake Erie for which site surveys have already been conducted or leases or power purchase agreements negotiated.

HBT: A-Rod went to ER during playoffs for his hip
That?s the report from Ken Rosenthal, who tweets that A-Rod was re-injured before the playoffs and that he was ?on pain medication throughout the?post-season. Pain so severe?after one of DS games, he had to be taken to emergency room and spent night there.?
Hurm.
On the one hand, I?m tempted to say that this is certainly sobering for the people who wanted to trash the hell out of Rodriguez during the playoffs.
On the other hand, how in the world could no one have reported that A-Rod spent a night in an ER during the playoffs before now? ?That kind of thing has to get out, doesn?t it? Heck, given how much crap people were piling on Rodriguez, you?d think the Yankees would have leaked or reported this themselves in an effort to protect their player from being attacked the way he was being attacked back in October.
Whatver the case, my spidey sense tells me that, yes, A-Rod was in a lot more pain during the playoffs than was generally reported, but that perhaps someone ? maybe someone close to A-Rod ? is gilding the lily a bit here.
As always, of course, if A-Rod can come back and play, this will be forgotten. If not, he?ll be considered a bum or a slacker or whatever it is people like to consider A-Rod. ?He?ll never get credit for trying to play through pain.

Rockwell painting fetches $2.8 million at Chicago auction
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Norman Rockwell's World War Two painting "Willie Gillis Food Package from Home" fetched $2.8 million from a private buyer at an auction in Chicago on Saturday, the auction house said.
The winning bid for the iconic artwork was less than the up to $5 million estimated ahead of the auction, said Emily Betts Susanin, director of marketing and communications for Susanin's Auctions in Chicago.
But it was "great news" nonetheless, she said, adding that no other painting had ever fetched more at a Chicago auction.
Renowned American artist Rockwell did a series of Willie Gillis paintings for the cover of the Saturday Evening Post magazine, starting with the "Package from Home" on October 4, 1941, and continuing through "Willie Gillis in College" on October 5, 1946.
"Package from Home" had been privately held in Chicago for decades. Susanin did not disclose the identity of its new owner.
As America entered World War Two, Rockwell introduced Willie Gillis, a fictional character, as an enlisted man surrounded by fellow servicemen, receiving a food package from home. Rockwell was most known for his cover illustrations of everyday life he created for the Post over 47 years.
The Willie Gillis series is among Rockwell's best-known work but other famous paintings include "Rosie the Riveter," "Saying Grace" and the "Four Freedom" series.
Rockwell's "Rosie the Riveter" sold at auction in 2002 for nearly $5 million. In 2006, Rockwell's "Breaking Home Ties" fetched a record $15.4 million from an anonymous buyer.
The previous record high for a painting sold at a Chicago auction was set in 1991 when Vincent van Gogh's "Still Life with Flowers" brought $1.43 million.
