Why Missouri conservatives are rallying around Todd Akin

Missouri conservatives are angry at the Republican Party 'establishment' for abandoning Todd Akin. Akin's latest small-donor fundraising drive online has netted $100,000 in two days.

Missouri conservatives say they are rallying around U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin despite his controversial comments about rape because they are outraged that "establishment" Republican Party leaders tried to railroad him out of the race.

A backlash has set in here in Akin's suburban St. Louis congressional district, where supporters said the national party had no right to attempt to force out a duly-elected candidate.

Backers described Akin as the "real deal," a politician fiercely committed to their social causes such as opposition to abortion, and to the Tea Party drive to downsize government.

Akin, 65, has defied widespread calls, including from Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, to step aside after he said women's bodies have natural defenses against pregnancy from "legitimate rape." The uproar knocked Romney's campaign off message days before the Republican convention, and major party paymasters pulled millions in campaign advertising for Akin.

The gaffe has put at risk what was considered a likely Republican pickup of a Democratic-held seat in a state becoming more conservative. Republicans need a net gain of four seats in the November election to ensure they gain a Senate majority.

"At first I felt (Akin's comments) were offensive to women and insulting to my intelligence," said Lisa Payne-Naeger, a member of the conservative Missouri Grassroots Coalition, who has an online political radio show. "What changed it for me was the Republican establishment's effort to chop him off at the knees and install one of their own in the race."

Payne-Naeger said she was so angered by the "onslaught" from party leaders that she donated to Akin's campaign on Wednesday.

Nearly two dozen Missouri Republicans interviewed on Wednesday and Thursday, most in the St. Louis area, but some in other parts of the state, expressed similar views.

Akin has seized on this theme, launching a "Help Todd Fight Back Against the Party Bosses" fundraising drive that his campaign said netted $100,000 in small donations this week.

Holding onto the Republican base of support is key to Akin's political survival, although he faces more major obstacles to defeating Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill in November.

A poll by Republican group Rasmussen Reports released on Thursday gave McCaskill a 10-point lead over Akin, whose lead in other polls was as much as 11 points before the rape comments.

"Akin faces more of an uphill race now," said Jay Dow, a political scientist at the University of Missouri in Columbia. "The question is whether moderate Republicans will turn out."

"THE REAL DEAL"
Throughout his career as a state representative elected in 1988 and then as a Congressman, Akin has been a staunch Christian and social conservative who has fought abortion and promoted the right to gun ownership.

Large hospitals tend to be energy-intensive

August 23, 2012 graph of fuels used by end use for large hospitals, as described in the article text

Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Note: Within a building, more than one fuel may be used for a given end use.

Large hospitals consumed 458 trillion British thermal units, about 5.5% of the total delivered energy used by the commercial sector in 2007, a much larger share than their percentage of total commercial floorspace. EIA recently released data from the 2007 Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) that highlights large hospitals' energy-related characteristics for all major fuels: electricity, natural gas, fuel oil, and district heat.

Large hospitals are those over 200,000 square feet. In 2007, there were approximately 3,040 large hospital buildings in the United States, with an average of 640,000 square feet per building.

Based on data from past CBECS, hospitals tend to consume more energy per square foot than other buildings in the commercial sector, such as offices, retail stores, or educational buildings. They are open 24 hours a day; occupied by thousands of employees, patients, and visitors; and often employ sophisticated heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to control temperatures and air flow.

In addition, many energy-intensive activities occur in these buildings: laundry, medical and lab equipment use, sterilization, computer and server use, food service, and refrigeration. Not surprisingly, most of these energy-intensive buildings had energy management and conservation plans in place, and used technology and products to save energy.

As shown in the graph above, natural gas was the most common main space heating fuel, used by 74% of the buildings, followed by district heat, or steam or hot water from an outside source, which was the main heating source for 20% of large hospitals. All hospital buildings had cooling (air conditioning) and almost all, 92%, used electricity to power cooling equipment.

Water heating was also used in all hospital buildings and had fuel-use percentages similar to space heating: 74% natural gas and 19% district heat. Cooking was reported in 95% of the hospital buildings, with natural gas and electricity the most common cooking fuels. Because of their need for a secure reliable source of electricity, almost all large hospitals (95%) used energy for generating electricity, primarily for emergency back-up generation. Fuel oil was by far the most common fuel used for this purpose.

For the first time in its 30-year history, the CBECS also collected data on water use. Large hospital buildings in the United States consumed an estimated 133 billion gallons of water in 2007, totaling $615 million in water expenditures, with an average of 43.6 million gallons and $202,200 per building.

Two Fun Grilled Fruit Desserts You can Make using BBQ Grills

Who said bbq grills are for meats alone? Bananas, peaches and pineapples are just some of the fruits which can be cooked to delicious perfection on grills. Try these wonderful, mouthwatering treats the next time you want to bring out your bbq grills for some summertime fun.

Barbequed Pineapples Round off your barbequed meal with delicious grilled pineapple rings served with creamy vanilla ice cream. This simple yet flavorfull treat consists of freshly sliced pineapple rings marinated in a spicy sauce and toasted to perfection on the grills.

To make your own barbequed pineapple dish, clean and trim a ripe pineapple. Use an all-in-one pineapple corer-and-slicer to cut out the core and slice the fruit into seven or eight rings of equal width. Set aside the freshly cut rings.

Mix together a quarter cup each of rum and brown sugar in a small bowl. Grind cinnamon, cloves, ginger and nutmeg. Add half a teaspoon of each of the freshly ground spices into the mix. Steep the pineapple slices in the marinade before refrigerating them for an hour.

Preheat the bbq grill to high heat before lightly oiling the grate. Add the pineapple rings to the hot grill and let them cook until the skin is nicely charred, roughly 15 minutes. For bbq grills that include a smoker, add in a few cedar wood chips to give it a delectable smoky flavor. Plate up slices with vanilla ice cream. Use the remaining marinade as a sauce, pouring it on top of the grilled pineapple and ice cream.

Barbequed Bananas Grilled bananas make the perfect dessert for a camping trip or a backyard barbeque. This simple and easy recipe needs very few ingredients. All you need are four or five bananas, freshly squeezed lemon juice, one teaspoon cinnamon, one cup brown sugar and a tub of vanilla ice cream.

Mix together the cinnamon and brown sugar. Quarter the bananas and dip the slices into the lemon juice. Roll the wet slices in the brown sugar and cinnamon mix till they are evenly coated in it. Preheat and lightly oil the grills. Wrap the banana slices in foil and cook each side for three minutes. The foil collects all the delicious cooking juices which can be used as a sauce.

Serve your grilled banana with vanilla ice cream and a topping of the lovely grill juices.

Give a fruity twist to your next turn at the grills using these unique recipes.

Ahead of the Bell Ruger made 1 million guns

SOUTHPORT, Conn. (AP) ? Sturm, Ruger & Co. Inc. said late Monday that it has made its one millionth gun this month, putting it on track to produce a record number this year.

The Southport, Conn.-based company said it reached the milestone on last Wednesday. It expects to beat its own record of 1,114,700 firearms produced in one year, set in 2011.

Shares of Sturm Ruger hit an all-time high this year as demand for guns rose, partly due to fears that President Barack Obama would tighten gun laws if he is re-elected. The same thing happened after Obama was first elected, though there were no changes to federal gun laws.

Gun demand tends to rise on concerns of further regulation. After the Colorado theater shooting in July that left 12 dead, background checks within the state rose. Those checks are needed in order to buy guns, and analysts use the numbers as a gauge for gun demand in the U.S.

In March, Sturm Ruger received orders for more than one million units, forcing it to stop accepting new orders until May so it could catch up.

Mike Fifer, the company's CEO, said in statement Monday that the company is improving its manufacturing process to keep up with strong demand.

Sturm Ruger shares are up over 50 percent in the past 52 weeks. They fell 86 cents to close at $44.29 Monday. Shares were unchanged in trading before the market opened Tuesday.

Shares of its rival, Smith & Wesson Holding Corp., have more than tripled in the last year.
