More volunteers needed for Cancer Prevention Study 3

NORCROSS, Ga. -- The American Cancer Society needs another 1,500 people to in metro Atlanta to volunteer for Cancer Prevention Study 3 to reach a goal of 5,000 by next week.

"I just thought it's?great cause, a great thing to do," said?Odette Talbert, who enrolled at the Robert D. Fowler Family YMCA in Norcross.

Talbert said she was motivated by her family history.

"My grandmother had cancer of the esophagus, and my brother had colon and rectal cancer," she told 11Alive's Jennifer Leslie.?

But Talbert is cancer-free. Volunteers have to be in order to?enroll in?CPS3.

"I figure they have to have control. So I'm a good control, someone who hasn't had cancer," said volunteer John Marshall.?

The registration process takes about 30 minutes. Volunteers are asked to fill out a form, get their waist measured and then give a blood sample.

"It's the first time we're actually asking for a blood draw," said Judy Godfrey of the American Cancer Society. "There is going to be a genetic component to this. The results will benefit future generations."

The American Cancer Society will track hundreds of thousands of volunteers nationwide. If any of them develop cancer, researchers will try to pinpoint why.

"The process is pretty simple," Talbert said. "Over the next 20 to 30 years, they'll occasionally send a survey to answer."

The enrollment process will continue this week and next at 21 sites across metro Atlanta.

Volunteers have to be between the ages of 30 and 65 years old.
