Pay Dirt: How to Turn Tar Sands into Oil [Slide Show]

More and more petroleum is flowing from Alberta's vast oil sands deposits

big-truck-dumping-oil-sandsTAR SANDS: This sprawling oil enterprise in northern Alberta employs nearly 400-ton trucks the size of a two-story home to carry 400 tons worth of pay dirt carved out of the earth by electric-powered bucket shovels the size of a two-car garage. Image: Courtesy of Suncor

FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta?Where does the U.S. get the bulk of the imported petroleum to support its oil addiction? Contrary to popular belief, it's not Saudi Arabia?it's Canada, which supplies the U.S. with more than two million barrels of oil per day, or more than a quarter of all its imported oil. And more than half of that output comes from bitumen melted out of the buried sands of northeastern Alberta?a sprawling deposit of extra-heavy oil underlying more than 142,000 square kilometers, or an area roughly the size of Florida.

This Canadian province?only slightly smaller than Texas?exported more than $52 billion worth of crude oil in 2011 because it's "one of the few places in the world where you can actually mine oil," notes Cameron Brown, director of advocacy at the Alberta Ministry of International and Intergovernmental Relations.

View a slide show of the oil sands process.

If oil is the "devil's excrement" as a Venezuelan oil minister once complained, then bitumen is the worst of it. Bitumen is essentially tar, hence the appellation tar sands, and it requires roughly 12 barrels of water to separate one barrel of it from the sand, although only three of those barrels are consumed, thanks to recycling. That water also has to be hot to separate the clingy hydrocarbon?at least 50 degrees Celsius, which requires burning natural gas to heat it.

Even then, the mined bitumen is too tarry to flow, so it is chemically manipulated further with heat and pressure in a process known as "upgrading" to become yellowish crude oil, diesel, jet fuel or other typical hydrocarbon products. Or it is diluted with light hydrocarbon liquids to become pitch-black "dilbit" (for "diluted bitumen"), capable of traveling via pipeline to the U.S. This kind of extra-heavy crude oil from sandy deposits is not commercially developed anywhere else in the world, although other countries such as Venezuela, Russia and even the U.S. have similar resources.

And that's just for the tar sands close enough to the surface?no more than 80 meters deep?to be mined. For deeper deposits, volumes of superhot pressurized steam are pumped underground to melt out the bitumen so it can be sucked up to the surface by production wells running in parallel. Such so-called in situ production requires less water but far more energy to get the bitumen flowing, resulting in greenhouse gas emissions some 2.5 times higher than those from mining. Thus far, the majority of bitumen production has been via mining but, this year, in situ surpassed it as the primary production method?a trend likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

As it stands, oil sands projects either under construction or already approved will raise production above five million barrels per day, including ExxonMobil's Kearl Lake project, expected to start mining oil in 2013. "We have environmental impacts now, and these impacts are about to get a lot bigger," notes oil sands policy analyst Marc Huot of the Pembina Institute, an environmental group working for responsible development.

The biggest environmental impact may be all the energy required to extract the oil from the tar sands?the burning of the resulting fuels in vehicles notwithstanding. Some scientists, such as NASA climatologist James Hansen, are convinced that using such resources?he calls them "the dirty needle" of an oil addict?will mean "game-over for climate change." Oil sands are among the most greenhouse gas?intensive forms of petroleum to produce. "Things that don't make sense from a planetary perspective are being actively encouraged," Hansen notes. "As long as fossil fuels are the cheapest fuel we will burn them and not solve the problem."

No. 3 Michigan beats Arkansas 80-67 for 9-0 start

(AP) ? Jordan Morgan gives Michigan opponents one more problem, when they're already trying to figure out how to defend Trey Burke, Tim Hardaway Jr. and the Wolverines' talented freshmen.

Morgan scored a season-high 12 points and matched a season high with 10 rebounds to help No. 3 Michigan beat Arkansas 80-67 Saturday.

The Wolverines (9-0) are off to their best start since they won the first 11 games of the 1988-89 season, when they went on to win the program's only national title.

"It doesn't mean anything," coach John Beilein insisted.

It will mean a lot, Beilein acknowledged, if Morgan's performance provided a glimpse of what the junior forward will do more often this season.

Morgan has been prone to playing passively throughout his career, but he grabbed six of the team's 18 offensive rebounds because he played with a lot of energy.

"When he's got that, we're a much better team," Beilein said.

Michigan's entire starting lineup scored in double figures.

Glenn Robinson III scored 17, Burke had 16 points and seven assists, Hardaway scored 14 and Stauskas added 12.

Morgan disagreed with the notion that he's a forgotten player on team that has generated excitement by other players, saying everyone is simply trying to play their role to help the team win, while averaging 6.9 points and 5.4 rebounds this season.

"Finish and get as many rebounds as I can, that's pretty much my job description," he said. "And, play good defense."

Michigan, which led Arkansas by as much as 13 in the first half, was ahead by only one point with 56-55 with 8:58 left.

The Wolverines went on a 10-2 run and coasted to the win, Beilein's 100th in six seasons at the school. Michigan was 10-22 in Beilein's first year and won just 15 games in his third year.

"I hope the next 100 at Michigan are easier than the first 100," he said.

Marshawn Powell had 18 points for the Razorbacks (4-4) and their leading scorer, BJ Young, scored all nine of his points in the first half before being held scoreless in 13 minutes of the second half when he appeared to have a leg injury.

"He might have a bruise," Arkansas coach Mike Anderson said. "I don't think it was just a cramp, he got popped."

Arkansas reserve Kikko Haydar had a career-high 13 points, Hunter Mickelson scored 10 and Rickey Scott had 10 points off the bench.

Beilein said he didn't know who Haydar was and that made sense because the junior guard had scored six points in six games this season and 31 in his career.

"I thought he walked in off the street," Beilein said. "What a great story, a walk-on, playing on CBS TV, and he accounted for 13 of their points. He was a bit of a difference-maker for a while."

The Razorbacks were coming off an 81-78 win over Oklahoma, their only win in a five-game stretch against teams from major conferences.

"I've never played a stretch of games like this since I've been in college," said Powell, a junior forward. "It's been tough, and we haven't won any of these (games against ranked teams), but it definitely going to help us in the SEC.

"We were in these games, and we've learned how much one possession can mean in a game, especially in someone else's house."

Michigan might not get tested until the Big Ten season starts, but it does have a trip to New York next Saturday to play West Virginia, the school at which Beilein coached before being hired to replaced fired coach Tommy Amaker.

So far, the Wolverines have shown they can run on offense or play a methodical, half-court game.

"The idea is, we want a game that travels and a game that is versatile," Morgan said. "We're going to play a lot of good teams, especially in the Big Ten."

And to win in the highly competitive conference loaded with ranked teams, including No. 1 Indiana, the Wolverines are going to need Morgan to play as he did against Arkansas and not like he has for much of his career.

"Jordan worked his tail off all summer, and you can see the results," Burke said. "He scored some points, but in every game, he's doing little things that make us a much better team. He keeps possessions alive, he grabs defensive rebounds, he shuts people down in the post and he gives us a big body down low.

"A lot of that might not show up in the box score, but we know he's doing it."

'Grey's Anatomy' creator disses Katherine Heigl

ABC

Katherine Heigl on "Grey's Anatomy."

By Us Weekly

"Grey's Anatomy" has had some pretty sensational storylines -- bomb explosions, plane crashes, mass shootings, etc. -- but not all of the drama happens onscreen.?

Four years ago, series star Katherine Heigl caused a bit of a stir on set when she withdrew her name from Emmy consideration because she felt she hadn't been "given the material to warrant a nomination." Writers on the show were reportedly miffed, and though Heigl remained on the show for two years after the incident, her relationship with series creator Shonda Rhimes always seemed strained.

PHOTOS: Famous feuds

Rhimes -- who also created the "Grey's" spinoff "Private Practice" and the political drama "Scandal," starring Kerry Washington -- recently sat down with Oprah Winfrey for an "Oprah's Next Chapter" interview airing Sunday, Dec. 9, on OWN. Among the topics they covered? Heigl's infamous Emmy snub.

"On some level it stung, and on some level I was not surprised," the "Grey's" head writer, 42, tells Oprah in a teaser for the interview. "When people show you who they are, believe them. I carry that with me a lot. It has served me well."

Heigl, 34, left the medical drama in 2010 to pursue film projects and spend more time with her family -- she and husband Josh Kelley adopted daughters Naleigh and Adalaide in fall 2009 and spring 2012, respectively -- but earlier this year, she expressed interest in returning to Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital to close out her character's arc.

PHOTOS: Stars who have adopted

"I've told them I want to," the?"Knocked Up" actress told E! News in January. "I really, really, really want to see where [Izzie Stevens] is. I just want to know what happened to her and where she went and what she's doing now. My idea is that she actually, like, figures it out, and finds some success and does really well in a different hospital."

Rhimes had other ideas, and none of them involved Izzie -- or Heigl. "I think it was really nice to hear her appreciating the show. At the same time we are on a track we have been planning," she told TV Guide in response to the star's wish to reprise her role. "The idea of changing that track is not something we are interested in right now."

PHOTOS: Hot TV doctors

Rhimes says she's grown a lot since that experience and, in general, during her nine years as a show runner. Speaking to Oprah about her greatest accomplishment over that time, she says: "I think I'm most proud of the fact that I have figured out how to exist as both a creative person and artist, and a businesswoman and manager. Because those two things do not go together."

"For a long time," she continues, "I really had a hard time with the idea that I was supposed to be this person who lived inside her head and created things but also managed a bunch of people and had to lead a group of people. And those two things have sort of come together. And I'm really proud of how that works now."

Italy PM Monti will resign as soon as budget passed - statement

ROME (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, whose government lost the support of the main center-right party this week, intends to resign after checking to see if parliament can pass next year's budget law, President Giorgio Napolitano's office said on Saturday.

Monti said he does not now feel that he has the support of parliament after Silvio Berlusconi's center-right People of Freedom withdrew its support from his government this week and therefore intended to resign, the statement said.

If the budget law can be passed "quickly", Monti said he would immediately confirm his resignation. Monti's announcement came after a two-hour meeting with Napolitano, who has the power to dissolve parliament.

Fourth Jelly Bean Update Leaks for Verizon?s Galaxy S3 as VRBLK3

We have been following the saga that is the Jelly Bean update for Verizon?s Galaxy S3 for some time now. At least three different Android 4.1 updates have leaked for the phone, none of which have become official, at least not yet. Last night, another leaked as build?VRBLK3. As you may recall, the previous leak, which came out on November 20, was build VRBLK1. The jump from 1 to 3 should be fairly minimal, so I would imagine at this point that we?re squashing minor bugs.?

On a related note, the same anonymous tipster that said 11/16 could be the day that Verizon starts to roll this out, hit us up again this week to say that 12/14 is now the day and that the final build has been signed off. It?s ?anonymous? so take whatever from that you will. The timing isn?t bad though, as days after he informed us, another build popped up. Still, take it lightly until we see an update roll out, hear word from Verizon, or find support docs.

If you would like to flash this leaked build, you will need Odin, root, and an unlocked bootloader. The full instructions can be found at the link below.

Boehner: No progress in fiscal cliff talks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? House Speaker John Boehner (BAY'-nuhr) says there's been no progress in negotiations on how to avoid the fiscal cliff of tax hikes and spending cuts and called on President Barack Obama to come up with a new offer.

Boehner told reporters outside his Capitol Hill office Friday that the president needs to get serious with the combination of tax hikes and cuts set to kick in after the first of the year. The Republican leader accused the president of, quote, "slow-walking" the economy toward the edge of the fiscal cliff.

Boehner called White House aides' comments that Obama was willing to go over the cliff "reckless talk."

Obama and Boehner spoke privately on Wednesday. The speaker called the phone call pleasant but unproductive.

Hillcroft Joe determined to seek revenge in Tote Gold Collar 550 - 2nd Rnd - Heat 1 at Harold?s Cross

Hillcroft Joe was unlucky to face an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Swift Marathon in the opening round of Tote Gold Collar 550 at Harold?s Cross. The black dog got bumped at the second bend and as a result, lost his pace significantly. Swift Marathon took the full advantage of the situation, and heaped plenty of misery on Hillcroft Joe - pushing him down to the third position.

The son of Top Honcho, out of Hillcroft Josie, is determined to pay back the debut with the same coin. The two hounds are locking horns in the Tote Gold Collar 550 - 2nd Rnd - Heat 1, to be held on Friday, December 7th.

Hillcroft Joe has the guts to get the better of Swift Marathon. His previous loss was just a matter of luck. If he had not suffered the mess early in the race, it could have been a great ride for the dashing hound.

Ahead of facing a disappointing loss here, the January-10 dog won a couple of races last month. On his last winning outing at Shelbourne Park, the maverick hound railed very nicely, and eventually sealed the victory by three lengths.

He is better drawn than Swift Marathon, and should dish out revenge. Swift Marathon is unlikely to be an easy nut to crack. Winning three of the previous four races shows how good momentum he is in. After taking a comfortable 2-length triumph in the first round, S. Graham?s charge is flying high, but surely needs to stay cautious of Hillcroft Joe.

There are four others contenders in the 550 yards contest. Their names are: Melodys Ace, Keelogs Diamond, Native Story, and Bartlemy Rocket. The ?100-for-winner clash is scheduled to start at 20:55 GMT.

Native Story is going through an unlucky spell, running well only in defeat. Keelogs Diamond was unimpressive on his previous trip, finishing third behind Ferdia Oscar. Bartlemy Rocket and Melodys Ace, both are struggling for form. So, it would not be a good move to expect anything special from them.

Too much religion at military academies? West Point cadet revives charge.

Citing overt religiosity on campus, a West Point Academy cadet publicly quit this week just months before graduation. This is not the first time the military has come under fire for practices that nonreligious students see as aggressively evangelical.

By Anna Mulrine,?Staff writer / December 7, 2012

When Blake Page announced this week that he was quitting West Point a few months before graduation, citing the overt religiosity on campus, he raised recurring questions about the pervasiveness and impact of evangelical Christianity within the ranks of the US military.

?I do not wish to be in any way associated with an institution which willfully disregards the Constitution of the United States of America by enforcing policies which run counter to the same,? Mr. Page wrote in his letter of resignation to the US Military Academy at West Point, in New York. ?

He cites, among other things, routine prayers at mandatory events for cadets and the practice of awarding off-campus passes and credit to students who take part in religious retreats and chapel choirs.?These activities, in turn, foster ?open disrespect of non-religious new cadets,? Page argued, adding that he had been told at West Point that it was not possible for people to have morals without believing in God.

This is not the first time such charges have been leveled within a military training academy. The US Air Force Academy came under similar criticism in 2005 for conferring preferential treatment on cadets who were evangelical Christians and promoting proselytizing in the ranks.

A survey commissioned by the Air Force Academy in 2010 showed some improvements in the climate of religious tolerance on campus, but also found that many cadets still felt pressured to take part in religious activities. Nearly half of the non-Christian cadets surveyed, for example, said their fellow students have a ?low tolerance? for atheists, a 20 percent jump from a similar 2008 survey.

Charges of evangelism went international when the Pentagon came under fire in 2010 for using gun sights engraved with Bible verses, fueling concerns that the war in Afghanistan would be seen as a military crusade. Some Pentagon officials at first dismissed complaints against the gun sights, comparing them to US currency engraved with ?In God We Trust,? but senior officers demanded that the military stop using them.

This came on the heels of reports that Air Force missileers were receiving Bible-centered ethics training, with the aim of helping them shake off lingering doubts about firing nuclear weapons. The training ? which had been in place for almost two decades and was known jokingly among the airmen as ?Jesus loves nukes? ? was halted in 2011.

?God and country is a big part of the military culture,? says Page in a phone interview with the Monitor. ?Anytime we have a ceremony of any type, there?s always prayer.?

During his time at West Point as the head of the Secular Student Alliance, Page helped to establish ?nontheist chapel time,? an alternative for nonreligious cadets. ?Before [that, if you didn't go to chapel] you could either go back to your room or have cleaning detail,? Blake recalls. ?A friend of mine was made to sing and dance and recite knowledge and do all sorts of embarrassing things while everyone else went to church.??

Police: Gun found in Ill. lawmaker's carry-on bag

CHICAGO (AP) -- A veteran Illinois state senator was arrested Wednesday after allegedly trying to board a flight from Chicago to Washington with a gun and ammunition in a carry-on bag, authorities said.

Sen. Donne Trotter, a Chicago Democrat who recently announced he would run to replace Jesse Jackson Jr. in the U.S. House, was carrying an unloaded .25-caliber Beretta handgun and a magazine clip with six bullets when he tried to board a flight at O'Hare International Airport, according to Chicago police.

Trotter, who is part the Illinois Senate's Democratic leadership, was charged with a felony.

The gun and clip were found in an outside zippered pocket of Trotter's garment bag during routine X-ray screening, according to a Chicago police report.

Trotter told Transportation Security Administration officers that he uses the weapon for work as a security officer at a Chicago security and detective firm. He said he worked late Tuesday night and did not realize the weapon was in the bag when he packed for his Wednesday morning flight, the police report said.

Messages left by The Associated Press for Trotter on his cellphone and at his office in Chicago were not immediately returned.

Trotter, 62, was charged with a Class 4 felony, which carries a penalty of one to three years in prison upon conviction. He was expected to appear in Cook County bond court Thursday, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said.

Police said Trotter would spend Wednesday night in a police lockup.

Trotter is licensed to carry a weapon and has a Firearm Owner's Identification card, Chicago police spokeswoman Melissa Stratton said.

Trotter was carrying a "firearm control card," issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, that allows him to carry a weapon during work hours and for no more than an hour commuting to or from work. A department spokeswoman said a security company helped Trotter obtain the card.

The card is issued after completion of 20 hours of classroom firearm instruction and 20 hours of firearm handling training.

Trotter ? known for wearing bowties and sometimes riding his motorcycle to Springfield ? served in the Illinois House from 1988 to 1993, and since then in the Illinois Senate, where he chairs the Democratic majority caucus.

Under former Senate President Emil Jones, he was the Senate Democrats' budget negotiator and known as a cool, calm presence in the often-contentious budget debates during the tenure of ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who is now imprisoned on corruption charges.

Trotter previously ran for Congress in 2000, a race in which both he and then-state Sen. Barack Obama lost to U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush.

He was born in Cairo, in far southern Illinois, earned an undergraduate degree from Chicago State University and a law degree from Loyola University. He is married and has four children.

No more free Google Apps for small businesses

Businesses with 10 or fewer employees have, until now, enjoyed free use of Google Apps. However, after Thursday's announcement, they will now have to cough up $50 per user, per year, to use Google Apps software which includes word processing, spreadsheets, email, and presentation programs. The cost is the same as larger businesses currently pay.

In total, more than 5 million businesses use Google Apps, although how many of those are free users is not known.

"When we launched the premium business version we kept our free, basic version as well. Both businesses and individuals signed up for this version, but time has shown that in practice, the experience isn't quite right for either group," writes Clay Bavor, Director of Product Management, Google Apps, on the company's blog.

"Businesses quickly outgrow the basic version, and want things like 24/7 customer support and larger inboxes. Similarly, consumers often have to wait to get new features while we make them business-ready."

Small businesses already using Google Apps free of charge will not be affected by this change. Likewise, Google Apps for Education will remain available as a free service for schools and universities.

Liquid Robotics' Wave Glider breaks Guinness record, does it in the name of science

Last fall, four autonomous Wave Gliders set out from San Francisco Bay to begin a two-fold mission: gather data about the oceans' depths and break records. The vessels, crafted by ocean data services provider Liquid Robotics, were launched in pairs, with one set headed for Australia and the other, Japan. Now one year later, the first of this fuel-less flotilla -- dubbed Papa Mau -- has completed its intended journey, reaching the land of Oz this past November 20th and beating out the remaining three Gliders at sea (one of which malfunctioned and had to be pulled from the water).

As the PacX project's team is quick to point out, the culmination of this record-breaking 9,000 mile trek was less about gaining a Guinness entry and more about generating publicity for the mass of hitherto unrecorded oceanic information. But though the initial run of the project is currently winding down, the outfit's SVP of Product Management Graham Hine expects further trips to Antarctica, the poles and the Northwest passage will follow at some point in the future. Without a doubt, the whole experiment's a master class in using the power of PR for the greater good, while giving marine biologists a treasure trove of useful data. Check out the source below for an expanded look at the project's roots and be sure to skip past the break for a video of the vessel's retrieval.

Alongside Australian Rules football and Rugby is the third most popular spectator sport around australia. Since its official race in 1842, Horse Racing in Australia flourished. Originally popularized by the British as the Sport of Kings, Horse racing made its way from the UK to Australia throughout the early years of British settlement. The very first horses arrived in the shores of Australia in the past year 1788. The first horses coming in the country are that includes a stallion, a colt, a filly and four manes which grew in numbers within the 19th Century. Since then horse racing has become a huge part within the Australian culture. To the Australian people, the sport has had great recognition and a extremely important tradition for having been witnessed by the people for centuries. Today, the nation has the most racecourses in the world and second to have the most horses alongside US. Throughout the year, the Australian Racing Board administers races. Melbourne autumn racing carnival, and spring racing carnival, Sydney autumn and spring carnival, Brisbane winter racing carnival, Adelaide autumn racing carnival, Perth summer racing carnival and Tasmanian summer racing carnival would be the major races in the country. Melbourne spring racing carnival showcasing the Melbourne cup is the most famous and biggest.

The Melbourne cup first started as domestic sport and has become the most awaited even in horse racing every year. Horse Racing in Australia comes about weekly with the start of racing season every 1st of August each year and ends on the 30th of July. PFT Power Rankings: Texans, Pats, Falcons 1-2-3

SchaubGetty Images

1. Texans:? Nine straight years with no playoffs followed by two straight years with playoffs.? For Texans fans, it was worth the wait.

2. Patriots:? Another year, another late-season winning streak.

3. Falcons:? Yes, they still have only one loss.? But there?s still something that seems to be missing.

4. Broncos:? The only problem with a Colts-Broncos wild-card playoff game is that one of them would have to lose.

5. Packers:? When the injured guys return, this team will be even more dangerous.? Unless other guys get hurt along the way.

6. 49ers:? It?s a good thing Jim Harbaugh has two good quarterbacks.? He may be needing the other one soon.

7. Seahawks:? With three straight wins at Chicago, the Seahawks need to start raising the 12th man flag before games at Soldier Field.

8. Ravens:? It?s a good thing they play well on the road in the postseason.? They eventually may have to.? Every week.

9. Colts:? The good news?? Andrew Luck has the resilience of Tim Tebow.? The better news?? Luck can throw the ball, too.

10. Bengals:? Their playoffs start in Week 16 against the Steelers.

11. Bears:? It?s not a five-game losing streak.? Still, 1-3 and sliding isn?t the way to get back to the postseason.

12. Steelers:? So does Charlie Batch have the hot hand now in Pittsburgh?

13. Giants:? Someone apparently forgot to tell the Giants that November has ended.

14. Redskins:? If God were really on the Redskins side, wouldn?t He have protected them from Albert Haynesworth?

15. Rams:? That tie could still make things interesting down the stretch if the Rams keep winning and enough of the other contenders keep losing.

16. Saints:? Yet again, the team hosting the Super Bowl won?t be playing in it.

17. Buccaneers:? At least the future is brighter than it used to be.

18. Cowboys:? Barely beating the Eagles J.V. team isn?t really something to brag about.

19. Vikings:? Why do they even try to do anything other than give the ball to Adrian Peterson?

20. Dolphins:? At least they?re still the only team in the last decade not named the Patriots that has won the division.

21. Bills:? Why do they do even try to do anything other than give the ball to C.J. Spiller?

22. Browns:? They?re gonna blow their chance at another top-five pick.

23. Titans:? The team that currently is in Houston gave the owner that used to be in Houston a double-barreled middle finger this season.

24. Lions:? Why do they even try to do anything other than give the ball to Calvin Johnson?? Oh, wait.? They don?t.

25. Jets:? Why do they even try?

26. Panthers:? Here?s hoping the new G.M. gives Ron Rivera a fair chance to show he can get it done.

27. Cardinals:? The passes made by Ryan Lindley are about as effective as the passes Audra Lindley used to make at Norman Fell.

28. Chargers:? Speaking of Norman Fell, the guy who likes like him will soon be free to manage an apartment building in L.A.

29. Eagles:? At some point, Andy Reid?s final year in Philly will make it impossible for another owner to sell him to a fan base as a viable coaching option.

30. Chiefs:? Officially, we?re neutral.? Unofficially, we?re Chiefs fans until further notice.

31. Jaguars:? It?s time to slay the fatted calf in Jacksonville.

32. Raiders:? Not-so-slowly but surely, Mark Davis is proving Mike Silver to be right.

Recovery Files:Children and Teens' weight gain when growth has ...

Dear Mods,?

Disclaimer: this thread refers to kids who are weight restored to the correct range, who have sustained this weight for a number of months and who are thriving because "state" is great. It is meant as preventative not corrective.

Would love to get the experts' advice on what should happen when growth stops. Maybe, it could be an addendum to the most excellent article on weight restoration?by Dr. O'Toole??

On the forum we say that kids need to continue on their weight gain trajectory into their 20's. What does that mean? ie: my child, who has tracked mostly in the 75th percentile most of her life, stopped growing at 15. We know from wrist scans that her bones are completely fused and that her full height will be what it is now. So, does that mean that she needs to continue gaining weight [whether intuitively/on her own or by us pushing weight] so that she can continue on that 75%tile until she is in her 20's? For her %tile, she would have to continue gaining about 3-4 lbs every year until she is 20.?

I asked Dr. O'Toole that question at the conference and I am confident that I ?understood her to say that if she was fully grown (as per evidence of bone fusion) then she could stay at her current range of weight. She said that the brain does continue to grow and the body continues to mature and there is some weight gain that occurs in the 20's and in the 30's. I asked, so we don't have to continue pushing weight up to try to keep up with their curve? She said no because she was fully grown.?

Then, Dr. Katzman in her presentation said that bone growth continues to occur into the early 20's.?

Now, how do we know when this weight gain in the 20's is supposed to occur? Is it possible that some kids relapse in college because the maturity kicks in and they are not compensating for that weight gain in the early 20's??

It would be lovely to get some clarification on this issue so that we know what to do with these kids who have reached full height.

I'm not a mod, but this sounds like a good time to take out the "State not weight" card.

If there are ED behaviors and thoughts, perhaps that might be evidence that weight needs to go up ???

YP,?

Anyone can weigh in on this thread, it is not just for the mods. What I meant is that I think we need some professional guidance on the issue and the mods and FEAST board have access to our FEAST advisors. I wholeheartedly agree on state not weight and Dr. O'Toole is clear about that. In our conversation, I gave her the update on dd. Told her at the 75%tile range she has great state and is definitively in recovery mode. The fact that she has stayed relapse free (other than two dips in weight) for 5 years is a testament that she is at the correct target weight. But, state issue aside, my question is more of a preventive nature rather than a corrective one.?We do use state as our measuring stick. It is what tipped us that d had lost weight a couple of months ago.

This question is crucial for those of us who have sent or are sending our kids to college/uni. Would love to send dd at her correct range. If it is artificially inflated, she won't sustain it. If it is under where she needs to be, that puts her at risk for a relapse. That is why I would love for the experts to weigh in on this issue of the growth curve trajectory. Here at ATDT we love to use our children's growth curves as guidelines, but is it STILL applicable to continue on the upward trajectory once they are fully grown, just as we did when they were growing?

I have been wondering about this too. It's curious that growth charts would show an upward curve into the 20's if most teen girls stop growing at 15 or 16. This seems to me to be pretty critical information. Experts, please weigh in!

Maria, thanks for starting this thread. ?My d is moving into this area as well. ?I don't believe she will grow in height anymore. ?When the N went over the chart with me, it made sense to stay on the trajectory, however, they never took height into consideration. It doesn't seem like weight should go up dramatically from 15-20, for instance, if the height has stayed the same. ?I agree that they will naturally gain weight in their 20s, but I hate to overshoot the goal when she is 15 and make her carry weight she doesn't need. ?I know, I know, weight doesn't matter, but to a 15-year-old girl it really does and she is doing beatifully already being at a weight she is somewhat uncomfortable with (ed or no ed).

I know that bringing up BMI might be controversial, because everyone is different.? However, it might be helpful to know that the CM & E (is that right?)/Maudsley video does say that most adults' healthy BMI is between 20 and 24.? That's still quite a range, but at least it's a starting point.? Since my D? reached her full height several years before the restricting started, it was obviously easier to figure out her target weight range.

I am also referring to a range (don't know what constitutes a range, 3-5 lbs? 5-7 lbs? not sure - not a number.?

Our d has naturally continued putting on weight, from initial weight restoration at 11, and reached her highest weight during the summer (right before she turned 16) when she had the last growth spurt and grew 1/4 of an inch. If she were to stay stagnant at her weight as a 16 year old until her 20is, her percentile would be lower than 75th tile. The only time that she has fallen below her %tile has been because of unintentional weight loss (twice). Both times state suffered. However, in both cases it was a result of weight LOSS not maintenance.?

New question, at what age does BMI become a more significant factor than growth curve?

Well, I wouldn't think that it would be useful or advisable to try to feed someone who is X years old into the weight they are supposed to be or predicted to be when they are X+Y years-later?old. Children change weight and height every year, but you don't W/R a 10yo to the 15yo target. Similarly, I can't see how it would be necessary or advisable to send your 18yo off at a weight that would be healthy for them at 25yo.

There are no "growth charts" per se for people over 20yo. In the US, the Metropolitan Life Insurance tables are often used, but they are problematic for very short or tall people, young adults, or very old people as they really only apply to men and women between 25-59yo, and REALLY only document the average weights of people with the lowest mortality rates during those ages (see this page for a discussion of the issues:?http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/met.htm ).?

I did a quickie lit search over lunch and came out with ZIP about this, so what follows is my musings based on what I have read.

Taking away age, your body has a predetermined "weight potential", just like it has a height potential. Adequate nutritional stores are crucial during those years when growth rate is steepest on the S curve (notice that growth curves show gradual change until 2, super accelerated change from 2-15, and then sort of flatten out. That is a classic S curve, and all kinds of growing things, people, populations, number of bacteria in a petrie dish, follow that pattern naturally). So, at every stage of rapid growth, your body's weight will tend to precede the height. That is why when they are kids, you are chasing a moving target. Normal growth means weight and height are shifting SEVERAL times each year.

But once growth has?plateaued (flattened out on the S curve), that dynamic ALSO changes. Weight doesn't need to be stored in the same way, and caloric needs adjust to current state and usage, rather than anticipated pre-programmed growth. I would predict that a YA in strong recovery is able to eat to the much slower demands of 20-25yo growth, as long as zie is eating when hungry (or eating enough to feel full) and getting good variety.?

If your YA remains the same weight, but their STATE goes wonky ED-wise, probably calories are insufficient to their body's needs. I would think the appropriate triage would be A) ensure that there are no purging behaviors and no skipping - in my mind, these are the largest dangers facing the YA transitioning to independent living B)?Assess whether activity has changed, and adjust meals up if needed.?If eating is healthy (no skipping, adequate nutritional content and variety, no ED behaviors), THEN you might need to adjust the weight range up.

I think Cindy Bulik has some evidence that binge behaviors in adults are tied to trying to maintain a lower weight than genetic potential?weight, so I'd be particularly suspicious if binge or binge/purge behaviors developed, that weight might need to go up a bit.

Attention! Healthy at Every Size PSA!

Technically, BMI is only a measure of Adult height-for-weight. I think the original work included 21yo+, IIRC.?BMI should NEVER be used for kids, and the fact that it is, is a gross mis-application of the measure.

It was intended for use assessing the nutritional status of ADULT populations. While BMI may have it's place as a bit of screening information,?BMI is NEVER appropriate as a singular measure of health for an individual. BMI will be inaccurate for very short, very tall, very muscular, or differently abled people.?

Labs such as renal and endocrine panels, hematology, vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate), ability to carry out daily function, emotional and mental health are ALWAYS appropriate measures of health.

Agree with Irishup and that BMI is a faulty indicator.....it does not measure leanbody/fat mass. This is where genetic determination and other factors come into play. Along with the tendency to be shorter or taller we all each have genetic tendency to develop or not develop lean muscle mass. Some will have larger percentage of slow twitch fibers as opposed to others will have larger percentage of fast twitch.......You cant really measure this accurately except in a submersion test or by autopsy and who wants to go through that inconvenience. Right?

I know your D is very athletic Maria and my guess is that she would have more muscle mass than a sedentary girl of the same height. Would she weigh more, yes likely but she should.

I guess I would be interested to hear what tools there are to give ranges for growth once growth plates have fused. But with all the genetic variables in body composition and the inherent difficulties in measuring........I don't know if its really possible... Will be interested to hear from an M.D....Perhaps you can email Dr. O'Toole a follow up, or Dr. Peebles.

I spent some time talking to Dr. O'Toole at the conference, and learned that she does not read this forum. She did say tat she would be happy to answer questions, though, that come up here if someone lets her know about it.

This could be done by email, but another way would be to Dr. O'Toole the question as a comment on her blog, to her entry on determining ideal body weight. I'm confident she will answer. Then, share the answer here!!!! That way, the question and its answer will get more "air time"!!

YogurtParfait_US?- I can confirm that Dr. O'Toole takes a lot of care of read and answer as many comments to her blog as possible. We are currently upgrading our comment software as well, to make it easier to share individual comments rather than simply an entire thread. I would also add that I am happy to facilitate communication to Dr. O'Toole in any way I can. I do try to read this forum as much as I can (and link to it), as there is simply nothing else like it on Web. We tell every parent who will listen to log in and join the conversation.

I have no medical/research "credentials", but what I have noticed is that when a person (female or male) reaches full height during their teens, their bodies then fill out as they become older and become a more mature shape. I never got taller after age 13 (did not have an ED), and I certainly didn't stay that same weight as an adult.

Irish, your explanation is AWESOME!

Morgan,

Thank you so much for passing this along to Dr. O'Toole.?

This whole thing came about from a query that I put out because when discussing my d's target range a few weeks ago (from a dip in weight cause by medication and pneumonia), I was advised that she should continue gaining weight to make sure that she?stayed on her 75th%tile trajectory until she was in her 20's. That would mean a gain of about 4 lbs every year. If that happens naturally, as per Irish's description, then I don't think that is a problem. BUT, I questioned the wisdom of artificially pushing d's weight up 3-4 lbs every year when we know in a measurable way (wrist X ray) that she is done growing. That is why I approached Dr. O at the conference. What she said makes total sense to me. However, I am asking if we can get some sort of official guideline because we don't want to be advising people here to keep pushing their kids to continue gaining in order to stay at X projected growth curve, once they are done growing, if that is not necessary.

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Like AnnieK, my impression of this issue is totally personal and non-professional. ?

I would think that once a child stops growing in height during adolescence, it would be reasonable to expect a 1-2 lb. weight gain every year or two into the early 20's (I'm thinking women here - it might be greater for men). ?I think the brain, bones, and other organs might still be growing. ?

Just subjectively, it seems that young women are bigger than adolescent girls. I've been comparing pictures (on FB) of my daughter's friends from H.S. to college, and they (non-eating disordered) have ALL grown in size (not necessarily in height).

Of course, this is all anecdotal- would love an expert to weigh in (no pun intended).

No doubt, Papyrus.

Just in terms of athletics, college athletes are SO much bigger than most HS kids, particulary the guys. But, I don't necessarily see a WHOLE lot of differences at school, for instance, between sophomore girls and senior girls (15 - 18). So, I do think, as Dr O said, there is this growth in the early 20's, which is when they?are in?college. YIKES! That brings up a WHOLE other can of worms. They will need to put on weight right when they are away from us. Phew!

Just as an individual example, my D had reached her full height by age 16, at which time her BMI was 21.2.? From age 17.5 until age 19.5, it was 21.6.? After the ED (early stages AN, dropping below 90% of prior weight but not below 85%) she is now back to BMI of 20.6 (she turns 21 in one month).? Her state is good, but it was only restored at her current weight -- not even 1 pound lower (which is why I want her to gain a few pounds).

Obviously, I never calculated or charted D's BMI before -- only did it after the weight loss.

Of course, every case is different.? But in general, as a child?grows up, it would be normal for the BMI to increase.? I just looked at an NIMH?study in the "Hall of Fame" posts, that found that adolescents with EDs who were discharged at a BMI of greater than 17.5, did better than those whose BMI was below 17.5.

I do realize that BMI has its limitations.? It was helpful for me, because my D is a young adult.

marilyn, I think what you did makes perfect sense. Lacking growth charts for YAs, it makes perfect sense to use other measures. Calibrating target weight in an adult from *their own* historical BMI is pretty much the same thing as using height/weight growth percentiles in kids. The key is calibrating to the individual.

When clinicians target an individual to a populational measure - like median growth percentile - or to some arbitrary cut-off - like a BMI of 18 because that is the minimum "normal" - THAT is when you run into problems. But BMI is often used this way, instead of the way you used it.?

So summary:
Measures that compare the individual to their own history and/or predicted trajectory GOOD!?
Measures that compare the individual to a group of people who are NOT them BAD!?

Here is a thought that my H and I have had about this:

The consequences to your health of being even 20 to 30 pounds overweight in life are MUCH lower than the results of being underweight, especially for this group of people with eating disorders. I would feel much more confortable sending my child off to college with 10?"extra" ?pounds....and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I know this sounds a bit simplistic....but to me is makes sense.

For some perspective, my d's BMI is 23. This is not about whether there is something wrong with our childrern being X lbs "overweight".

Mamabear, I agree with you in principle but you are still re feeding a growing child. My question comes from the perspective of a child in recovery for 5 years, who has stopped growing, and who by following her hunger cues lets her body put on the weight it needs to. Her weight may be stagnant for months or even a year, sometimes she goes over her % tile at other times she stays close to her lifelong %tile but it continues to go up slightly. Should I artificially put weight on her to follow a fixed percentile number? That is what is at the heart of this question.

Maria,

Your daughter is 16, has been fully recovered for 4.5 years, and has a BMI of 23.

So, have you charted her BMI percentile, as well as height/weight?? If not, I might consider doing it (for the past 4.5 years), just so you have another piece of data.?

Ultimately, I would go with your gut.? And what Dr. O'Toole said.? It seems to be me that you can treat your D at this stage as though she is healthy, until she shows otherwise.? Your antennae will pick up the signs that something is amiss, I feel sure.? If she had never had AN, would you try to put weight on her now?? Clearly not.

Marilyn,?

Yes, I ?have gone by her growth curve all along. Also, state has always been a good indicator for us. I simply used the BMI as point of reference for others, not us. I am not concerned about my child at this point.

I'll rephrase my query for those who might be joining in late to the thread.?

I feel like it would be good to have experts weigh in on whether, in general terms, if the following are in place for a child who has stopped growing:

state is excellent aka no sign of ED behavior or anxiety
thriving in environment in every aspect,
eating normally but?gaining at a much slower rate (in our case healthy appetite that keeps up with caloric needs), etc...

If?growth is done, should WE push weight to X range so that child can continue on the projected growth curve. ie: for my child 75% - 76%th percentile until they are 20-21?. To stay in her projected growth curve, she would have to gain about 3-4 lbs per year on an upward basis until her 20's. I don't have a problem with that happening if that is what her body needs to do. However, I sought the experts' advice before I artificially?(as in me feeding her extra calories as opposed to her eating what her body naturally tells her it needs) bump up weight to keep up with her pediatric growth curve.?

We are constantly told "state not weight" so if state is awesome, should we even be concerned about growth curves after they are done growing?
