NBA ALL-STAR GAME NOTEBOOK: Kobe Bryant takes heed of elders' advice
ORLANDO, Fla. - Whatever ailed Kobe Bryant that forced him to pull out of his All-Star Game media session subsided by Saturday morning, which meant Bryant was able to hold court with reporters for the first time this weekend.
Bryant, who said his illness Friday was the result of eating something that didn't agree with him, touched on a variety of subjects while waxing nostalgic over his 14 th All-Star appearance.
How much has changed between his first appearance and this one?
Bryant remembers running around New York with Kevin Garnett during his first All-Star weekend as a teenager, scoffing at older teammates Michael Jordan and Clyde Drexler's warnings that the relentless pace wanes over time.
Now at 33, he looks forward to resting more than carrying on, although he did leave room for one splurge while he was in Orlando.
"I haven't had a chance to go to Disneyworld yet," he said. "Maybe I'll do that."
As for Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, who is acting as unofficial host this weekend while also playing out his very public feud with the Magic, Bryant senses some uneasiness.
"A little awkward, isn't it?" he said. "It's awkward."
Having been in Howard's shoes at one point - it wasn't so long ago Bryant demanded the Lakers trade him much like Howard has done with the Magic - Bryant can empathize.
"He just wants his team to be better," Bryant said. "Players sometimes reach a certain level of frustration when
they don't feel the needle is moving in the right direction. So I'm sure he's a little frustrated."Bryant has also been observing the Jeremy Lin phenomena, and judging by how good the New York Knicks guard is, Bryant wonders how many so-called talent evaluators can overlook such a good player.
"They all would be fired if I owned the team," Bryant said. "I hear all this stuff how it came out of nowhere and I just think that's a load of crap. You can't play that well and just come out of nowhere. There has to be something there and everybody just missed it. So heads would roll."
Stern defends Paul decision
NBA commissioner David Stern defended his role in the Chris Paul-to-Lakers trade in which he stepped in and nixed the deal.
"I didn't veto anything," Stern maintained. "We are acting on behalf of the owners, as the owner's rep. New Orleans decided not to make the trade."
He also dismissed the notion he somehow stopped the trade, arguing it never officially reached the level of actual trade.
"There's no superstar that gets traded in this league unless the owner says, 'Go ahead with it,'" Stern said. "And in the case of New Orleans, the representative of the owner said 'That's not a trade we're going to make.'"
That representative was Stern himself.
"Correct," he said.
So in effect it was Stern's decision to turn down the Lakers offer.
"I said that New Orleans would not make the trade that had been proposed to them," Stern clarified.
Asked whether he made the right decision turning down the Lakers trade and saying yes to the Clippers proposal, Stern said time will tell.
"You know, buy a ticket and see," Stern said. "We'll see how it's works out."

Utah Jazz forward Jeremy Evans won the Slam Dunk contest, earning the title in a multimedia fan vote over Indiana's Paul George, Houston's Chase Budinger and Minnesota's Derrick Williams.

Healthy foods missing from stores in low-income black neighborhoods, UGA study finds
Friday, February 24, 2012Most convenience stores have a wide variety of chips, colorful candies and bottles of sugar-sweetened carbonated beverages. While shoppers can buy calorie-heavy foods wrapped in pretty packages in these locations, what they usually can't find are the fresh produce, whole grains and low-fat dairy products necessary for a healthy diet.
These stores are the only nearby food source for millions of Americans living in what are called food deserts, because they are isolated from affordable healthy food. In recent studies, University of Georgia foods and nutrition researchers uncovered the unequal distribution of food stores in one Southeast community. The first study covered access to stores for people using food stamps, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, while the second study looked at what healthy foods were available at supermarkets, grocery and convenience stores. Both studies found access to healthy food is most problematic in low-income, predominately black neighborhoods.
"Easy access to affordable healthful foods is essential to promoting health and preventing diseases," said Jung Sun Lee, assistant professor in the UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences and co-author of a pair of studies examining the food environment on the Florida Panhandle.
"Research examining food environments is a relatively new area in the nutritional sciences," she said. "Understanding the distribution of different kinds of food stores and the kinds and quality of the foods they offer has the potential to provide an explanation of why and how individuals are able or unable to follow dietary recommendations."
The Florida-Georgia connection surfaced when Connie Betterley, a community health promotion coordinator, worked with fellow Leon County Health Department administrators to collect data with a goal of making policy changes and interventions to improve access to healthy food. One of those collaborators was UGA graduate Sohyun Park, who contacted Lee about evaluating the data.
"She knew that UGA graduate students with similar interests in food environments needed data to analyze for their theses and dissertations, so a very nice collaboration developed to complete this project," Betterley said.
The studies examined 48 neighborhoods in Leon County, Fla., whose residents were identified as having high rates of childhood obesity and diet-related deaths. Using Geographic Information System technology and a registry of food stores, the distribution of food stores across neighborhood racial composition, wealth and rurality were examined. Comprehensive food store surveys were used to access the price and availability of healthy foods by food store type, neighborhood income level and racial composition.
Accessibility of SNAP-accepting stores
Results from the first-ever study of food deserts in relation to food assistance benefits accepting stores will be published by UGA researchers in the March issue of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.
"The size and types of stores available may have considerable influence on what people purchase and consume, ultimately influencing their health," said Samantha Rigby, a former UGA graduate student and study co-author. "Access to supermarkets has been shown to promote healthful food choices, and these stores are the most likely type of food store to provide the greatest variety of foods at the lowest prices."
SNAP, formerly the Food Stamps Program, provides food assistance to more than 43 million Americans a month. Florida is home to 2.9 million recipients; 10 percent of the population in the study area relies on assistance for food.
"While they may qualify for financial awards, there are no accessible stores that accept SNAP, or stores with enough variety in foods to fully utilize their benefits," Rigby said.
Primarily black neighborhoods tend to have less access to SNAP-accepting supermarkets than white or mixed race neighborhoods. In fact, no supermarket was available in predominately black neighborhoods in Leon County. SNAP-receiving residents in primarily black neighborhoods in the county may have limited shopping options because the food store type that is most likely to accept benefits, supermarkets, is not present.
"Because this racial group historically has a higher prevalence of chronic disease than whites, lack of SNAP stores nearby and resulting limited food choices may further decrease the quality of their diet and health," Rigby said.
Accessibility of healthy foods
An accompanying study looking at foods available in accessible stores was published in the November 2011 issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's publication Preventing Chronic Disease. The study looked at the availability and price of healthful foods by type of store, neighborhood income level and racial composition within a community that has high rates of diet-related illness and death.
"This study suggests that access to supermarkets and more healthful foods varies by neighborhood, which may negatively influence people's eating behavior," said Angela Leone, a former UGA graduate student and co-author of the article.
A sample of 10 fruits and 10 vegetables was examined in the grocery, supermarket and convenience stores sampled. While supermarkets carried all of the products, grocery stores lacked variety in fruits and convenience stores did not carry any vegetables.
"Fruit availability scores were significantly higher in high-income than in low-income neighborhood stores," Leone said.
All supermarkets carried low-fat milk. About 63 percent of grocery stores had low-fat milk while only 36 percent of convenience stores stocked the healthier dairy option. Whole wheat bread was available in supermarkets, but it was much less likely to be found in grocery stores (38 percent) and convenience stores (7 percent). Identical products also cost more in convenience stores.
"For dietetic professionals such as myself, these studies were eye-opening," Leone said. "We often think there is a lack of nutrition education or nutrition knowledge when in fact there may be other barriers that individuals face that inhibit their ability to follow a healthy diet, such as the nutrition environment that they live in and around."

There's a procedure many have never heard of but is being used to treat certain cancers with great success, especially liver cancer.
It's called transarterial chemoembolization and is often referred to as "chemo beads." It is a minimally invasive procedure that injects chemotherapy drugs directly into the blood vessel feeding the tumor.
Doctors mix tiny beads with chemotherapy drugs and inject the mixture into the patient. That allows the drugs to focus directly on the tumor rather than the entire body. Doctors say it is more effective with fewer side effects.
Linda Gabel is an industrial designer at Mosaic Design Studio and got a big wake-up call one day.? She went to the emergency room with intense pain thinking she was having a heart attack.
"They found a tumor on my liver that had exploded," said Gabel.? She quickly learned that she had a rare form of cancer called gastrointestional stromal tumor.? Gabel had surgery to remove a large tumor in her liver, but then months later another tumor was discovered and surgery was not the best option.
Doctors chose transarterial chemoembolisation and targeted the tumor in her liver with chemo beads. ????????????????????????????????????
Dr. Brian Schirf, at Riverside Methodist Hospital performed the procedure in which he mixed tiny beads with aggressive chemotherapy drugs and injected them into the artery that fed Linda's tumor.
"We tend to get a very high concentration of the beads and chemotherapy in the tumor and not necessarily within the normal liver," said Schirf.
The beads sit in the tumor and leach out, delivering the drug straight to the tumor and over time, killing the tumor.? It's an aggressive, yet minimally invasive approach.

"We're very happy with the result she has had.? The MRI she had in follow up shows no residual enhancement at all...the rest of her liver was spared and the area around the tumor is dead," said Schirf.
The big perk for patients is they receive aggressive cancer treatment, with fewer side affects since the treatment is localized, rather than delivered to the entire body.
"It was huge because I didn't have hair loss.? I was still tired, and had some symptoms, but I'm able to work.? I came back within five days, which is terrific," said Gabel.

People who can't relax are generally fairly anxious and agitated and are overloaded on many fronts. National Cathedral needs $20M+ fix (Politico)
The National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., still requires $18 million more in funds to repair the damage it suffered from an earthquake that hit the region last August, bringing the total cost estimate for all restoration work to more than $20 million.
The cathedral announced that in the first six months following the earthquake, a total of $2 million was raised to carry out the first phase of the restoration. It had originally estimated that $15 million would be needed for the complete repair work.

In the State of the Union, President Obama suggested that the foreign earnings of U.S. corporations should be subject to a ?minimum tax? to prevent corporations from shifting earnings to tax havens. The White House has promised to release the details about the level and operation of such a minimum tax in the next few weeks.
If properly designed, the president?s minimum tax could substantially improve the current system of taxing foreign profits of U.S. multinational corporations ? by both raising revenues and encouraging domestic investments.
The current system for taxing earnings of foreign subsidiaries controlled by U.S. corporations is counterproductive. Such foreign earnings are theoretically taxed at a 35% rate if brought back to the U.S., but not taxed at all by the U.S. as long as these earnings are kept abroad.
Faced with this stark choice, U.S. corporations are holding abroad over $ 1.5 trillion in foreign profits, and this amount is rising rapidly. The current tax system discourages U.S. corporations from using their foreign profits to build facilities in the U.S. or buy American companies. It also generates almost no tax revenues for the U.S. Treasury.
To replace the current system, business lobbyists have suggested that the U.S. follow the lead of other industrialized countries by adopting a ?territorial? system for taxing foreign profits of domestic corporations. In such a territorial system, the foreign profits of U.S. corporations would be taxed only in the foreign country where they were earned, and not by the U.S.
However, none of our major trading partners has a pure territorial system for taxing foreign corporate profits ? for two good reasons. Almost all countries impose domestic taxes on ?mobile? corporate income, such as investment interest or royalties, because it can be so easily shifted from one country to another.
More importantly, many of our major trading partners collect taxes on corporate income earned in tax havens where companies effectively pay little or no tax. These tax havens violate the fundamental premise supporting a territorial system ? that foreign profits are already effectively taxed where they are earned, so they should not be taxed again in the home country.
The president?s proposal would fix this inherent problem in a territorial system by ensuring that all foreign profits of U.S. multinationals are taxed once at a minimum rate ? either by the U.S. or another country. To be workable, this proposal should have three main components.
1. Congress should enact a permanent tax exemption for U.S. corporate profits earned in countries with effective corporate tax rates above a specified minimum. The minimum rate should be no higher than 20% since that is the effective corporate tax rate in most of our major trading partners, according to a 2011 study by the National Bureau of Economic Research.
This general exemption should not apply to mobile income of U.S. corporations, such as investment interest, which should continue to be subject to U.S. taxes as it is currently under the Internal Revenue Code. More broadly, U.S. taxes should be assessed on foreign profits of a U.S. corporation if these profits were artificially transferred through complex transactions to countries exempt from US tax.
2. Congress should levy a minimum tax on U.S. corporate profits in any tax haven to prevent a ?race to bottom? ? in which countries bid for corporate facilities by offering to minimize corporate taxes there. In other words, the U.S. would no longer allow its corporations to defer indefinitely U.S. taxes on any profits allocated to these tax havens.
This general rule should be subject to a major caveat for low-tax jurisdictions where corporations conduct actual operations. A U.S. corporation should receive a credit against the minimum tax for the taxes it actually paid in such a jurisdiction. For example, if the profits of an Irish subsidiary of a US corporation were taxed at 12.5% in Ireland and the U.S. minimum tax were 20%, these profits would be subject to a US tax of only 7.5% ( 20% -12.5%= 7.5% ).
3. Congress should allow all corporate profits earned overseas before 2012 to be repatriated to the U.S. at a low rate, such as 8% or 9%, for the next two or three years. This low rate would facilitate the transition to a better permanent system, and would not be part of a one-off tax holiday for repatriated corporate profits. Another tax holiday would merely reinforce the current counterproductive system for deferring U.S. taxes on foreign profits.
Such a transitional rule is needed because corporations reasonably relied on the current system in the past ? which allowed US corporations to defer U.S. taxes forever on all their foreign profits as long as they were kept abroad. It would be unfair to impose a minimum tax now on a corporate strategy that was perfectly legitimate for many years.
This three-part proposal would be clearly superior to the current system, which discourages U.S. multinationals from deploying their foreign profits in the U.S. and raises almost no tax revenues for the U.S. This proposal would raise revenues from U.S. corporate activities in jurisdictions with no or low taxes, while encouraging U.S. corporations to use their foreign profits to build facilities and create jobs in the U.S.
The critical political question is: what should be the minimum tax rate on foreign earnings of US corporations? Although 20% is the effective corporate tax rate in our major trading partners, business lobbyists might push for a lower rate ? such as the 12.5% rate in Ireland.
On the other hand, liberals might object to 20% as too low, relative to the 35% tax rate on domestic corporate profits. However, the effective U.S. tax rate on foreign profits of U.S. corporations is zero, so there should be strong incentives to reach a reasonable compromise.
